Dischingen can be explored from many different angles: the Thurn & Taxis themed trail starts in the town centre, while St. John the Baptist Parish Church and the local history museum each offer their own cultural highlights. In the surrounding region, Lake Härtsfeld and the Härtsfeld Museum Railway add to the range of options. Possible interests therefore range from a themed trail and sacred architecture to rural everyday history and activities on the water.
Hiking Around Dischingen
The Thurn & Taxis themed trail leads from the centre of Dischingen to Taxis Castle and into the English Garden. The route is approximately three kilometres long, with six information boards along the way. The trail combines a clearly stated, manageable distance with insights along the route. Taxis Castle itself is not open to the public. The adjoining English Garden has maintained paths and several distinctive landscape features.
A bench on the “Lake Härtsfeld–English Garden–Castle and Castles” route offers panoramic views of Dischingen and the Egau Valley. The view takes in both the town and the valley. Hikers who appreciate a fixed point of reference will find a specific stopping place here; the bench is located on the named route.
Church, Architectural History and Organ
St. John the Baptist Parish Church combines architectural history with a distinctive instrument. It was built by Joseph Dossenberger the Younger, a pupil of Dominikus Zimmermann. The church also houses an organ built by Joseph Höß in 1782, which is considered the organ builder’s only surviving instrument that is still playable. The building and the organ therefore offer different points of interest for a visit: the architecture on the one hand and the preserved organ on the other.
The church is open to visitors during the day. As access arrangements may change, check locally before your visit.
Rural History and Images
The Dischingen local history museum illustrates former rural life in the Härtsfeld through objects from farming, crafts and the home. Its focus is on everyday objects and the work associated with them. Since 1977, the Rural Picture Gallery at Ballmertshofen Castle has displayed around 400 pictures and framed sayings from Härtsfeld farmhouses. The museum and gallery have different emphases: the former focuses on everyday objects, while the latter features pictures and framed sayings from farmhouses.
Taxis Castle and the English Garden
Taxis Castle, also known as Trugenhofen Castle, is located in Dischingen and comprises several buildings. These include the Cavalier Building, the Theatre Building, the Chapel Building, the Prince’s Building and the Prince-Elector’s Building. The castle is not open to the public. The themed trail nevertheless leads to the castle and into the English Garden; these two places should not be taken to imply access to the castle. For a visit to the garden, its maintained paths and distinctive landscape features are the relevant points of interest.
Lake Härtsfeld in the Surrounding Region
In the region around Dischingen, Lake Härtsfeld serves as a recreational area. It covers 11.5 hectares and is up to four metres deep. Windsurfing and paddling are available at the lake; there is also a multi-generational playground and a large sand and mud play area. The combination of water sports and play facilities sets this excursion destination apart from the cultural attractions in Dischingen.
The lake’s wildlife is also part of its character: it provides a habitat for fish and bird species, European crayfish, swans and beavers. These habitats add a nature aspect to the recreational activities, without guaranteeing that any particular animals will be spotted.
Travelling on the Härtsfeld Museum Railway
The Härtsfeld Museum Railway runs for more than 5.6 kilometres through the Egau Valley between Neresheim and Dischingen, ending at Lake Härtsfeld. Historic original vehicles and buildings have been restored. Services have resumed on part of the route, from Neresheim through the Egau Valley. The route description therefore connects several places in the region; however, it does not provide information about timetables or a specific day to visit.
Karlsbrunnen Campsite
For groups, the Karlsbrunnen campsite in Dischingen-Trugenhofen can accommodate up to five groups. Facilities include barbecue areas, a playground, a pavilion, parking spaces and a football pitch. Toilets and showers are also available. The capacity and facilities listed provide groups with specific information to help them choose their type of accommodation, without making any statement about current availability.
