If you are looking for accommodation in Gerstetten, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus: views across the Alb plateau, marked hiking trails, local culture or geological features in nearby Heldenfingen. The wider Heidenheim destination adds a broader landscape and hiking context.

Views and geological history

The 40 m-high water tower offers panoramic views across the Alb plateau; on clear days, you can see as far as the Alps. The view across the plateau and the long-distance views reaching the Alps on clear days are two ranges from the same viewpoint.

The Heldenfinger Cliff is located in nearby Heldenfingen. Its undercut notch was carved out by wave action; the larger boreholes were made by piddocks, and the smaller ones by boring sponges. Here, the focus is not on distant views but on the shape of the undercut notch and the boreholes of different sizes. This makes sightseeing and geological observation two distinct focuses of a trip.

Hiking: trail network and circular route

The trail warden of the Gerstetten local branch of the Swabian Alb Association maintains 39 km of marked hiking trails. These include a circular trail to the “Wettertannen” local recreation area, which has barbecue facilities. The 39 km refers to all the marked trails maintained by the local branch, while the circular trail has a specific destination. This lets you first choose between a trail network and a route with a named destination.

Before setting out, it is advisable to check current route conditions, as they may change. This is particularly helpful when planning a specific hike, without implying that the maintenance of marked trails guarantees unchanging conditions.

May Day celebration and Reef Museum

Every year on May 1, the local branch of the Swabian Alb Association holds its May Day celebration with a social gathering in Gerstetten’s market square. This recurring event gives you a clear reason to include the local celebration in your travel plans. If you are planning a visit for that day, check the latest event information in advance.

Since July 2004, the Reef Museum in Gerstetten railway station has been an official information point for the European Geopark Swabian Alb. Its role within the Geopark complements the other geological and landscape themes of a stay here. If you are planning a visit, check the latest opening hours and access information beforehand.

The wider region: Heidenheim

In the wider Heidenheim destination, karst features, lively rivers, forests and heathland are part of the landscape of the Heidenheim Brenz region. The 52 km-long Brenz River runs through the region. This takes the regional perspective beyond the individual viewpoint in Gerstetten to encompass a variety of landscapes.

The certified Albschäferweg is also part of this regional context. It runs for 158 km through the Heidenheim Brenz region, a cultural landscape of the Swabian Alb shaped by migratory shepherding, and is dedicated to shepherds and their flocks. Compared with the Gerstetten circular trail to Wettertannen, it offers a different scale: a circular trail with a specific destination there, a long-distance hiking trail through the region here. You can therefore tailor your hiking plans to a local circular route or a regional long-distance trail.

Another regional point of interest in the wider Heidenheim destination is the Eselsburger Valley. In the Heidenheim district, it is considered by far the most valuable habitat for amphibians and reptiles.
