Nagold Dam and the trails around Besenfeld give Seewald a variety of reasons to visit: water, short nature experiences, themed walks and cycling. Routes range from an easy circular trail of about 500 metres to a cycling route of around 90 kilometres. If you are looking for a hotel in Seewald, you can plan your stay around a simple question: which of these activities would you like to focus on?

Water and nature at Nagold Dam

Nagold Dam is surrounded by a 650-hectare protected landscape. There are six public and two private parking areas along the reservoir. Local arrangements may change, so check the parking situation before setting out. Swimming and bathing are permitted in the Nagold Dam’s forebay. As usage regulations may change with water management needs, we recommend checking local notices before your visit.

Nagold Dam near Erzgrube is considered the area’s only sailing spot. An IWA windsurfing school at the reservoir offers boards, wetsuits and lessons. Check with the operator before travelling to confirm who is running the service and whether it is available.

Short walks and themed trails

The Kingfisher Trail is an easy circular route of approximately 500 metres. Its natural section includes a biotope and a large insect hotel. The trail also features an interactive water play area with a mini Nagold about 100 metres long.

The Felix Nature and Adventure Trail runs for eight kilometres around Besenfeld; 17 information boards cover animals, plants and the environment. The seven-kilometre Brunnen Walk is a cultural route focused on historic fountains. At eight rather than seven kilometres, the Felix Trail is one kilometre longer and has a different thematic focus. Seewald is also developing the “Genuss Runde Seewald” (Seewald Enjoyment Route) as another walking option for visitors and residents.

Cycling and route distances

The Nagold Valley Cycle Route runs for approximately 90 kilometres from Seewald-Urnagold to where the Nagold flows into the Enz at Pforzheim. Seewald is also part of the Murg/Enz Valley Mountain Bike Arena, which has a signposted route network of around 800 kilometres. The approximately 90 kilometres refer to the course of the Nagold Valley Cycle Route; the roughly 800 kilometres refer to the Arena’s network, not to a single ride. This means there is a route with a defined start and finish alongside a mountain bike network as two distinct options.

Culture in the wider destination of Freudenstadt

In the wider destination of Freudenstadt, Alpirsbach offers its own cultural highlights. Alpirsbach Monastery, with its imposing monastery church, is one of the few monasteries in southwest Germany to have survived according to the design of the medieval Hirsau Reform. A traditional historical walking tour of Alpirsbach visits historic buildings and includes a stroll through the spa gardens. The Museum of Local History explains the development of the town of Alpirsbach through a selection of collectibles. In the monastery museum, the permanent exhibition “Monks and Scholars” displays items of clothing, letters, drawings, games and vessels spanning six centuries.
