The Kinzig spring and Kinzigsee are located in the Zauberland nature area in Loßburg. The area around the lake provides a habitat for numerous plant and animal species. Together with Vogteiturm and several trails, it offers a range of nature experiences.
Kinzigsee, habitats and views
The nature area around Kinzigsee brings together the Kinzig spring and the lake with a diverse habitat for plants and animals. The nature trails each have a different focus: some explore topics such as fields and meadows or the beaver, while the Augenblickrunde Vogteiturm connects the tower’s views with Zauberland.
Vogteiturm stands on the Rodter Höhe and is open year-round. The tower is 35 metres high; 172 galvanised steel steps lead to a platform at a height of 31 metres. In good weather, the view from there extends beyond Loßburg to the Zollernalb. When planning your visit, it is helpful to note the difference between the tower’s height and the platform’s height: the viewing point is below the top of the tower. If you would like to combine the walk to the viewpoint with a circuit, the Augenblickrunde Vogteiturm is a suitable option.
Themed trails in Zauberland
The Wiesenerlebnisrunde is a circular trail just under one kilometre long, with eight information boards about fields and meadows. At five kilometres, the Augenblickrunde Vogteiturm is considerably longer and connects the tower with Zauberland via narrow paths. The two circuits therefore differ both in length and focus: fields and meadows are the main theme of the shorter loop, while the longer one links the tower and Zauberland.
The Bibererlebnispfad has its own focus. It runs between Kinzigsee and the source of the Kinzig along narrow paths, passing five information boards about beavers. Children can learn interesting facts about beavers and hide in a beaver lodge. The trail descriptions thus offer a range of themes and lengths, without requiring you to fit every stop into a single circuit.
Cycling along the Kinzig
For a longer ride, the Kinzigtal cycle route runs from Loßburg along the Kinzig to Alpirsbach. You can return by train; check the current train connections for the day you plan to travel. This lets you plan the cycling route as a trip in its own right and arrange the return journey separately.
Culture in the wider destination of Freudenstadt
The wider destination of Freudenstadt also includes cultural attractions in Alpirsbach. Alpirsbach Abbey, with its imposing abbey church, is one of the few monasteries in southwest Germany to have survived in accordance with the principles of the medieval Hirsau Reform. The abbey museum’s permanent exhibition, “Monks and Scholars,” displays clothing, letters, drawings, games and vessels from six centuries.
The Museum of Local History in Alpirsbach offers further insights: using selected collectibles, it explains the town’s development. The classic historical town tour visits historic buildings and includes a walk through the spa gardens. These cultural attractions complement Loßburg’s nature and trail options with their own themes in the wider destination of Freudenstadt.
