Church history, traditional crafts and cycling give you three concrete starting points for planning a trip to Schietingen. St. Nicholas Church and the Blacksmith Museum in the old forge on the village square represent different historical themes; the cycle path to Talheim offers another perspective on the village. If you choose Schietingen as your destination, you can decide whether to focus on local history or a cycling trip.

Villagescape in the Steinach Valley

Schietingen is a clustered village in the Steinach Valley. The term describes a compact village layout and helps you understand the place as a connected settlement. Newer developments on the outskirts extend along the slopes on the left bank to the north and south. Apart from the steep valley slopes, the land within Schietingen’s boundaries is fairly flat. The settlement pattern and terrain thus offer different clues for understanding the village’s location.

Church and Forge

The Chapel of St. Nicholas in Schietingen was first mentioned in 1535; the Protestant church dates from 1575 and was remodelled in 1782. If you enjoy exploring history through dates, you’ll find several clearly dated milestones here. A service is held in the traditional Schietingen St. Nicholas Church on the second Sunday of each month at 10:30 a.m. Check the date before your trip. The old forge right on the village square now houses a Blacksmith Museum showcasing the historic craft of blacksmithing. The church and museum offer different cultural highlights: sacred history alongside traditional crafts.

Cycle Path to Talheim

The cycle path from Talheim to Schietingen has been continuously available to the public since October 30, 2025. A 660-metre section within Talheim’s municipal area is part of the everyday cycle route connecting Freudenstadt and Nagold and was completed in October 2025. For route planning, it is important to note that only the specified 660-metre section is part of the everyday cycle route. October 2025 refers to the completion of this section; October 30, 2025, marks when the route became continuously available.

Nagold: Townscape, River and Castle

In Nagold itself, the River Nagold continues to shape the townscape; there are many green spaces along the river. The Nagold Valley Cycle Path runs from its source in the Black Forest to its confluence with the Enz in Pforzheim, passing through the centre of Nagold. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific ride. Walking routes in Nagold run through the old town, along the Nagold and up to the castle. Regular guided tours of the history of Hohennagold Castle and the Schlossberg are offered at the castle ruins; check the latest dates in advance. The Schlossberg was inhabited and fortified as early as Celtic times. Water has also shaped the town’s history: for centuries, cloth-making and tanning were Nagold’s most important trades, supported by the Nagold and Waldach rivers.
