In Ebhausen, church history and everyday culture meet trails with a variety of themes: a bell in the historic church tower dates back to the 13th century, while information boards explain local history and nature. When planning your trip, it’s worth deciding what appeals to you most: historic sites, a trail with scenic views, or a combination of hiking and cycling?
History in the Tower and the Old Schoolhouse
One of the four bells in the tower of the Protestant church, built around 1350, is dated to between 1230 and 1250. It is considered the oldest still-ringing bell in all of Württemberg. The Widumhaus also tells of times gone by: a description from 1666 called it the only one of the five former Widum houses in Ebhausen still standing. Widum houses were used to provide the pastor with land and property.
The permanent exhibition “Living in Times Past” offers another perspective on local history. Since the end of 2000, it has been housed in the Old Schoolhouse on Schulstraße, a building dating from 1840. On display are furniture, equipment, clothing and linen once used in Ebhausen and the surrounding Upper Nagold Valley. Check visitor arrangements before your visit.
Trails Between Local History and Nature
The Wendener Runde trail passes through Ebhausen’s town center. There is a place to stop for refreshments, and information boards point out sites of historical interest. From the viewpoint on Goldberg, you can see across the Black Forest heights towards Hornisgrinde. A table with seating and a reclining lounger invite you to linger and enjoy a picnic. As the availability of the place to stop for refreshments and the condition of the route facilities may change, it’s worth checking for current information before your visit.
The 4.7-kilometer Flößerweg is a hiking and cycling trail between Ebhausen and Altensteig. Its starting point in Ebhausen is at the end of “Zum Hau” street. The information boards along the route cover topics including timber rafting, the Monhardter Bach nature habitat, fauna and flora, wet meadows along the trail, and the waterworks. The route thus combines themes from the history of land use with nature and water.
For a longer alternative with a strong focus on local history, consider the Historical Circular Trail in Ebershardt, a district of Ebhausen. It is ten kilometers long and passes 27 information boards. These describe life in Ebershardt from the 12th to the 20th century. Compared with the 4.7-kilometer Flößerweg, it is the longer of the two routes; its boards cover a broad historical period.
Waterscapes and a Seasonal Event
The 51-hectare Mindersbacher Tal adds a distinctive landscape feature, with springs, streams and ponds. The Nagold and several tributaries shape the varied scenery. Together with the distant views from Goldberg, it offers a different perspective from the information boards, which present historic sites and topics along the trail.
The Backhausfest in Ebhausen is also part of the wider Calw travel destination. It takes place every year on the first weekend in May; as part of the program, visitors can try onion cake and wood-fired oven bread from the local bakehouses. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for your chosen year.
