Schniederlihof gives Oberried a tangible historical connection, while the local hiking and cycling options each have a distinct focus. Felsenweg winds through a rocky landscape with panoramic views, while the Erlenbacher Weidelehrpfad explains the links between grazing livestock, the cultural landscape and specially protected habitats. When choosing, you may therefore want to consider whether you would prefer a route with named landscape destinations or one that offers more insight into the care of these habitats.
Farm history and cultural connections
Schniederlihof was built in 1593 and opened as a museum in 1972. The cattle drive is the traditional highlight of Alemannische Woche in Oberried. Check the specific event dates if you plan to attend the cattle drive. The herb garden is idyllically situated near the former monastery in Oberried. If you would like to visit, check the current access arrangements in advance.
Route to Schniederlihof and a place to rest
Schniederlihof can only be reached on foot. From the church in Hofsgrund, a signposted, easy-to-walk path leads 750 metres to the farm. There is a large car park in the village of Hofsgrund.
Schniederlihof has a rest area with seating and a small kiosk. During opening hours, it serves drinks, coffee, cake and a light snack; weather permitting, it is also open on weekdays. If you plan to stop for refreshments, check the opening hours in advance.
Hiking trails and a mountain bike trail
The Felsenweg quality hiking trail is 12.2 kilometres long. It leads from Oberried through an impressive rocky landscape at around 1,000 metres above sea level and down into the unspoilt St. Wilhelmer Tal. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the Dreisamtal and of Schauinsland, Stübenwasen and Feldberg. The trail’s length, elevation, valley destination and viewpoints give it a distinctive landscape character.
The Erlenbacher Weidelehrpfad has a different focus: it explains how grazing livestock enriches and maintains the cultural landscape, thereby helping to preserve specially protected habitats. If you are interested in the connection between grazing and habitat conservation, it offers a different thematic experience from the Felsenweg’s route and viewpoints.
The “Schädelwäg” mountain bike trail is suitable only for technically skilled mountain bikers, as its steep sections cannot be bypassed. This restriction is an important consideration when choosing a route: the trail is not suitable for every skill level.
