Get to know Ebringen through two different routes and its protected landscapes: the historic Stations Trail leads to Berghausen Chapel, while a signposted loop explores the theme of winegrowing. There is also a castle that now serves as the town hall. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on the chapel and pilgrimage history or the Vineyard Loop.

The Stations Trail to Berghausen Chapel

The Stations Trail from Ebringen to Berghausen Chapel has been documented since the early 17th century and is an old pilgrimage path. There are eight chapels along the way, and the route is about 2.3 kilometres long. It starts at the parish church, passes through RottenmĂĽnsterhof and continues through the vineyards to Berghausen Chapel. The originals of the former Stations of the Cross, dating from 1751, can be seen in the parish church. In this way, the route links its outdoor stations with a historical artefact inside the church.

Vineyard Loop and Landscape Protection

The signposted Vineyard Loop starts and ends at Winzerhof Ebringen and is about three kilometres long. Along the way, it passes the “ReSidence” pavilion of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, which serves as an example of sustainable construction. Information boards introduce the grape varieties grown here. At about three kilometres, this loop is slightly longer than the Stations Trail. The themes also differ: grape varieties and sustainable construction are the focus here, while the other route features chapels and pilgrimage history.

The slopes around Berghausen Chapel have been protected across an area of about 150 hectares since 1996. In the Berghauser Matten protected area, you may leave the designated paths only to move around the immediate vicinity of Berghausen Chapel. Check local notices before your visit; trail conditions may change.

Sumsergarten is the core zone of the Jennetal nature reserve and is known for its abundance of orchids. This adds a botanical highlight to the historic trail stations and winegrowing. The two nature reserves and the protected slopes each offer a distinct reason to explore Ebringen’s landscape.

Castle History and Present-Day Use

Ebringen Castle was built between 1711 and 1713 on the site of the former provost’s building and is now used as the town hall. Its construction period and predecessor building root it in the town’s history, while its current function gives the historic building a role in the present as well. Together with the Stations Trail, the castle offers another way to explore Ebringen’s history, without requiring an additional route.
