Merzhausen brings together cultural history, events, trails and local winegrowing. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the different occasions in mind: the Christmas market takes place at a recurring date during Advent, while the FORUM, the bird trail, the BĂĽrgerBad and the weekly market each appeal to different interests.

Culture and local history

Since 2012, the FORUM Merzhausen has been a cultural and community centre, as well as a place to meet and enjoy culture. Its diverse cultural programme gives the town a clear cultural focus. If culture is one of your travel interests, you can consider the programme as a reason to plan a visit.

The Merzhausen Christmas market is a regular fixture in the events calendar and is held every year on the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent. If you are planning a visit for a particular year, check the municipality’s latest notice for the date. Around 70 participants offer goods they have made themselves, either locally or regionally. These include handicrafts, baked goods, honey from their own beekeeping operations, and homemade liqueurs, spirits and vinegars. The specific selection may vary.

The weekly market has a different focus: It offers, among other things, regional fruit and vegetables, homemade jams, cakes and baked goods, honey, Mediterranean specialities, olives, oil, vinegar, meat, sausages and flowers. The selection of vendors and goods may change.

The manor house of Jesuitenschloss, built in 1666, is part of the area’s architectural history. Jesuitenschloss is also used as a starting point for numerous hikes. Merzhausen is also connected with a writer’s biography: German writer Kurt Heynicke lived in the town from 1943 until his death on 18 March 1985. The municipality reviewed and archived his estate. The Schönstatt Chapel is known as the “Shrine of Vocation”.

Trails and BĂĽrgerBad

The bird trail is a circular route that can be walked in either direction. It starts at the information board in the village centre at the Dardilly roundabout. It is not suitable for prams: the trail has steep ascents and descents and passes through the Hagste woodland along a narrow section. This limitation is an important practical distinction when choosing a trail.

Nearby, the Hexental adventure trail follows a historic route from Au to Bollschweil and is about 10 kilometres long. The route lengths therefore differ: the circular trail starts in Merzhausen, while the longer route runs between the stated endpoints in the Hexental.

The BürgerBad in Merzhausen has a 12-by-25-metre swimming pool with a swimming area and a non-swimming area. If you are planning a visit, check the operator’s current details about public access.

Winegrowing and local products

Wine has traditionally been grown in Merzhausen. Müller-Thurgau, Gutedel, Spätburgunder, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Riesling are cultivated on around 15 hectares. Wines produced in Merzhausen are considered fresh and fruity; most are made dry. The area, grape varieties and style give local winegrowing a distinct character and make it a topic in its own right alongside culture and trails.
