Oggelshausen lies on the southeastern edge of the flat Federsee peatland. Art and trails offer two concrete points of reference when choosing a destination: the sculpture field in the village and several routes in the Federsee area. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to your interests—perhaps focusing on stone sculptures, peatland and landscape history, or a combination of the two.
Sculpture Field and St. Lawrence Festival
The sculpture field near Oggelshausen comprises 15 distinctive stone sculptures. They were created by prominent sculptors from five countries and three continents. Signposting to the sculpture field is very good within the village. Follow the signposted route for about 2 km to a hiking car park at the edge of the forest; from there, you can walk to the sculptures.
Another regular event in village life is the St. Lawrence Festival. It is held every year on the first weekend in August in honor of Saint Lawrence and Saint Agatha. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, schedule it for this weekend and check the specific event dates in advance.
Peatland Trails and Choosing a Route
For a hike with several themed stops, the Archaeological Peatland Educational Trail is a destination in its own right. It is 9.5 km long and has 11 stations on prehistoric peatland settlements and natural and regional history. From Oggelshausen, you can access the trail directly; it leads into the Southern Federseeried Nature Reserve. This route therefore connects the landscape with insights into its natural and settlement history.
The Federsee Circular Hiking Trail offers a different perspective: it leads around the Federsee Nature Reserve and roughly follows the lakeshore as it was before the lake was artificially lowered just over 200 years ago. Starting in Bad Buchau, the trail passes Oggelshausen, Tiefenbach, Seekirch, Alleshausen, Brackenhofen and Moosburg in succession. While the peatland educational trail is clearly defined by its 11 stations and 9.5 km length, the circular hiking trail links several villages around the protected area.
Cyclists will also find connections in Oggelshausen: routes from here link to the nationally significant Danube Cycle Route and the nationally significant Lake Constance Cycle Route. For public transport, State Road L 280 provides a direct connection to Bad Buchau and Biberach. Check current journey times for your planned trip.
