Wain lies in the upper Weihung Valley and in the Holzstöcke, one of the largest continuous forest areas in south-eastern Baden-Württemberg. Local history, Protestant traditions and various opportunities for active pursuits give a trip several distinct focal points.
The Forest and Weihung as Geographical Landmarks
Its location in the Holzstöcke and the upper Weihung Valley shapes the town’s geographical landmarks. The Weihung rises in Wain and flows for around 30 kilometres before joining the Danube near Ulm. The forest, valley and river are therefore among the defining features of the landscape around Wain. Getting to know the town means discovering not just a single attraction, but also its distinctive geographical setting.
The Castle, St Michael’s Church and Local History
The centrally located castle recalls the change of ownership that followed the sale of Wain in 1771. St Michael’s Church offers another perspective on the town’s history: it was rebuilt in 1688 after the old church had been demolished. Its character combines Protestant Baroque architecture with Protestant theology of baptism. The memorial plaque to the exiles inside the church tells of Protestant families who left Arriach in Carinthia in the 17th century. The Wain congregation also has a place in history and is considered one of the oldest Protestant congregations in Upper Swabia.
Another landmark is the district of Bethlehem. It was first mentioned in 1529 and is marked by two signs unveiled on 8 December 2013. Together, the castle, church and district’s history offer different insights into Wain: from the change of ownership and religious traditions to the historical development of a named district.
Golf and Training: Two Active Pursuits
Reischenhof in Wain offers 27 holes arranged across three nine-hole courses. These can be combined to create 18-hole rounds; a 27-hole day with a day ticket is also possible. The course is set in the moraine landscape of Upper Swabia. The terrain is hilly, with a variety of slopes. Choosing between an 18-hole round and a longer day of golf allows for different time commitments, without requiring any particular style of play.
Propuls offers a different focus. The fitness studio provides circuit training, machine-based workouts, free-weight and flexibility training, as well as a range of classes. There is also a sauna area and the StĂĽble bistro. Its outdoor area is specifically intended for summer. Wain therefore offers golf and a varied range of training options as different ways to spend time on a trip; when planning a visit to the bistro, bear in mind that the outdoor area is seasonal.
