The Federsee Museum and the Federsee Boardwalk showcase two different sides of Bad Buchau: archaeological finds and reconstructed ways of life on the one hand, and the moorland on the other. Together with the historic bathhouse, they create a local focus on prehistory, architectural history and landscape. When choosing your destination, it is helpful to consider whether the museum and historic building or the paths to archaeological sites and through the moorland should shape your stay.

Finds, Reconstructions and Archaeological Sites

The Federsee Museum in Bad Buchau combines original finds with an open-air site where authentic reconstructions depict the ways of life of Ice Age hunters, pile-dwellers and Celts, as well as a section of a village. Finds and reconstructions offer different ways of exploring the past: original artefacts are presented alongside depictions of past ways of life that bring historical contexts to life. The 9.5 km archaeological trail to the sites in the southern Ried begins right beside the Federsee Museum. It extends the museum’s themes with a route whose destination is also shaped by archaeology. This makes it possible to choose between exploring original finds and reconstructions and following the route to the archaeological sites.

Two Routes of Different Lengths

The Federsee Boardwalk offers a different focus. It starts at the Federsee car park and leads 1.5 km into the moorland on a dry, firm path, ending at a viewing platform on the Federsee. It is considerably shorter than the 9.5 km archaeological trail. The destinations also differ: the boardwalk leads to the viewing platform in the moorland, while the trail leads to the sites in the southern Ried. The route length is therefore not the only factor to consider; you can also decide which subject you would like to focus on along the way. The starting points also provide different local reference points: the Federsee car park for the boardwalk and the museum for the trail.

The Bathhouse and Festival Traditions

The bathhouse, with its Alemannic half-timbering and a building inscription on the west gable, was built by Buchau Abbey in 1459. It served as a bathhouse until 1782 and is one of Buchau’s oldest buildings. Its architectural history offers a different focus from the Federsee Museum’s prehistoric themes: here, the emphasis is on a historic building and its long history of use. The festival calendar follows its own rhythm, too. Together with the Federsee communities, Bad Buchau celebrates the Adelindis local heritage and children’s festival every two years.

More Cultural Highlights in the Wider Biberach Destination

The wider Biberach destination also encompasses cultural highlights beyond Bad Buchau. The Upper Swabian Museum Village of KĂĽrnbach presents six centuries of history; more than 30 historic buildings offer insights into everyday life in times past. In Laupheim, the Museum of the History of Christians and Jews explores three centuries of shared life among Christian and Jewish residents. The pilgrimage church in Steinhausen was built from 1728 to 1731 by Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann. These additional insights broaden the cultural focus of the Biberach destination to include everyday history, shared life and architecture.
