Warthausen is considered an idyllic place in southern Germany. Two distinct highlights can help you plan your visit: the Öchsle Railway through the rolling hills of Upper Swabia and the literary history of Warthausen Castle. This lets you tailor your stay to a railway and landscape experience or to cultural history. For getting there, the DB regional train stop and parking at the station are other practical points to consider.

The Öchsle Railway and the Trail Along the Railway Line

The Öchsle Railway runs for 19 kilometers from Warthausen to Ochsenhausen. It passes through the hilly Upper Swabian countryside, and the Öchsle museum train passes historically accurate restored railway stations. There are many good vantage points for photography and filming along the route. The landscape, railway line, and historic station buildings together give the journey its distinctive character.

If you prefer to get around on foot, a well-maintained trail runs alongside the Öchsle railway line and is suitable for hiking. This lets you experience the same railway corridor in a different way: the 19 kilometers refer to the Öchsle Railway between Warthausen and Ochsenhausen, while the trail follows the railway line. If you are planning a ride on the museum train, check the current timetable in advance.

Getting to Warthausen

DB regional trains stop in Warthausen on the Ulm–Friedrichshafen Südbahn. Free parking is available at the station. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable. If you want to park at the station, it is advisable to check the local parking regulations, as conditions may change.

Warthausen Castle: Literature and Museum

Under Count Anton Heinrich Friedrich von Stadion, Warthausen Castle became an intellectual center known as the Warthausen Musenhof. In 1776, Christoph Martin Wieland wrote Agathon at Warthausen Castle. The castle museum displays portraits and manuscripts by Wieland and Sophie de la Roche. Most of the interior dates from the 17th and 18th centuries; the castle chapel contains medieval panel paintings and sculptures. In this way, literary history, historic rooms, and art from different periods come together.

Regional Cycling Route Context

The Danube–Lake Constance Cycle Path runs for 156 kilometers from the Danube to Lake Constance, through the green hills of Upper Swabia and the Württemberg Allgäu. Along the cycle route are historic towns, museums, and buildings associated with the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. This route offers a wider regional perspective; it is a different subject from the Öchsle Railway, which runs from Warthausen to Ochsenhausen.
