A bell cast in 1510, late Baroque wooden figures and a village museum forge that has been part of the museum since Whitsun 1998 give Dettingen an der Iller a distinctive cultural and historical focus. The Iller Cycle Path is another reason to visit: for the Heimertingen–Ulm stage, the village museum is recommended as a destination for a stop in Dettingen. This lets you choose a hotel with the question of whether architecture, crafts or cycling will shape your stay in mind.
Churches and chapel: history in different building phases
The Church of the Assumption of Mary is listed as a protected monument. It was built in 1911/1913 after an earlier church was demolished; the oldest parts of that church dated to 1271. The Unterdettingen Chapel is also protected as a monument and is dedicated to Saints Vitus and Agatha. Its present building dates predominantly from the 18th century, while the tower is older; its bell was cast in 1510. The interior contains late Baroque wooden figures. The dates point to different building histories: 1271 refers to parts of the earlier church, while the chapel combines a predominantly newer building with an older tower.
Village museum: crafts and dialect
The Dettinger & Illertaler Village Museum opened at Whitsun 1994. A working forge has been part of the museum since Whitsun 1998, and a wheelwright’s workshop was added in 2010. Both workshops offer a different focus from the architectural history of the churches: here, the emphasis is on crafts. In the 19th century, 23 basket makers worked in Dettingen, making wicker baskets and selling them in the region. The local history of crafts therefore extends beyond the museum’s workshops.
The local dialect is also part of the area’s cultural history. The sixth edition of the Dettinger & Illertaler Dialect Booklet, published in 2016, contains more than 3,000 words and 450 expressions used in Dettingen and neighboring municipalities. The booklet is available at the village museum; check in advance whether it is still on offer. Museum tours can be arranged. If you are planning a tour, check the current dates and contact options in advance.
Cycle to Dettingen
The Heimertingen–Ulm stage of the Iller Cycle Path is listed as 45.90 kilometers long and rated easy. The route description recommends the village museum as a place to visit during a stop in Dettingen. Check the current route before setting out, as route details may change. A separate geographical fact concerns the municipality’s eastern boundary: for about four kilometers, it follows the left bank of the uncorrected course of the Iller from 1852. These roughly four kilometers describe the boundary, not the length of the cycling stage. The motorway service area is also considered Germany’s first artistically designed service area on a motorway.
Your travel plans can therefore focus on different things: the churches, chapel and museum offer points of interest in architectural and craft history, while the cycling stage adds a specific reason to stop in Dettingen. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose the focus of your stay accordingly. If you are interested in a tour or the dialect booklet, it is best to inquire in advance.
