Uttenweiler combines a manageable walk on the Bussen with viewpoints, a natural swimming pool and cultural sites, each with its own focus. The Creation Trail offers a specific walking route; Ahlener Höhe and the surrounding area add views of the landscape and leisure opportunities. There is also the memorial site and the castle mill, which explore different historical themes.
Creation Trail and landscape
The Creation Trail around the Bussen is considered easy. The walk takes about 45 minutes, though this can vary depending on trail conditions. It starts near the parking lot of the Gasthaus Steiner and ends 20 metres below the Bussenkirche.
From Ahlener Höhe, the view extends across the Federsee to the Alps. As a public recreation area, the hill offers a barbecue and fire pit, a weather shelter, and play and fitness equipment. Local rules apply to the use of the barbecue. The Ahlener Oak, which is more than 700 years old, is a natural monument and contains a wayside shrine with a Baroque figure of Christ.
Uttenweiler’s hiking and cycling routes offer viewpoints towards the Alps as well as paths along streams and lakes. Anyone planning a short walk will find a useful reference point in the Creation Trail, with its stated start, finish and approximate walking time. Views and bodies of water provide further impressions of the landscape on hiking and cycling tours.
Natural swimming pool: water and activity
The Uttenweiler natural swimming pool includes a one-hectare bathing lake, a long sandy beach, slides and diving boards. There is also a shallow water play area for children. Beach volleyball, badminton courts and recreational play equipment add to the facilities. This means the focus ranges from playing in shallow water to sports beyond swimming; unlike the views from Ahlener Höhe, the lake and beach take centre stage here.
Cultural sites and historical traces
The Sebastian Sailer Memorial Site can be visited by prior appointment; arrange your visit before travelling. It displays pictures and sacred objects from Sebastian Sailer’s time. The castle mill can also be visited; its half-timbering is attributed to a reconstruction by Abbot Ulrich von Stein. The two sites thus offer different kinds of cultural experience: a memorial site with objects from a particular period and a building whose half-timbering is linked to an attributed construction history.
The Bussen is an active Marian pilgrimage site; Celtic rectangular enclosures in the surrounding area point to an ancient settlement region. The restoration of the Bussen ruins made panoramic views from the keep possible. The Federsee area, with evidence of Stone Age finds, is only a few kilometres from Uttenweiler. The historical themes therefore range from Stone Age finds in the Federsee area and Celtic traces around the Bussen to the active Marian pilgrimage.
