Kakheti is Georgia’s most important winegrowing region. At the same time, its landscapes range from the Alazani Valley to steep mountain passes, evergreen forests and dry steppes. Winegrowing, protected nature and historic sites give the region many different facets—from large qvevri to multi-day routes through protected areas.

Wine, Qvevri and Regional Cuisine

Among Kakheti’s best-known features are its large qvevri, including vessels with a capacity of 6,000 to 8,000 litres. Telavi is one of the key stops on Georgia’s wine route. In the city and the surrounding villages, you can visit family-run wineries as well as larger producers. The Tsinandali Estate includes a winery and a palace; its history is closely connected with the family of Prince Aleksandre Chavchavadze.

The region’s dishes also give a visit a distinctive culinary focus. Well-known local foods include mtsvadi, chakapuli, khashlama, churchkhela and tatara, which is made from grape juice. So, alongside wine and wineries, regional dishes are also central to discovering Kakheti’s food culture.

Protected Areas and Different Routes

The Vashlovani Protected Areas comprise a nature reserve, a national park and three natural monuments. Their network of trails offers one- and two-day tours by car, bicycle and on safari. Conditions may vary seasonally, so check trail conditions before setting out.

The Lagodekhi Protected Areas have five marked hiking trails, as well as educational, horseback riding and cultural tours through largely unspoilt natural landscapes. The protected areas are considered the oldest in Georgia and are home to rare plant and animal species that are considered endangered in Georgia and internationally. Allow three days for the route to Black Rock Lake: the 48-kilometre trail is covered on horseback and is of moderate difficulty.

The route through Artsivi Gorge is laid out differently: it is 7 to 8 kilometres long, takes one day and combines a car journey with a walk. This route is also of moderate difficulty. From viewpoints, you can watch griffon vultures and other birds of prey; the trail also passes the endemic plant Campanula kakhetica. Its length, duration and means of travel make this day trip quite different from the three-day horseback route to Black Rock Lake.

Birdlife and Clear Visitor Restrictions

The Iori Nature Reserve is shaped by the Iori River, which forms a wildlife-rich natural corridor. Migratory birds breed there in spring and autumn, while various animal species live there year-round. In the Chachuna Nature Reserve, 82 bird species breed; ten are listed as endangered in Georgia.

The strict nature reserve of Batsara protects unspoilt stands of the endangered European yew, which cover more than 100 hectares. There is a clear restriction for visitors: access is limited to educational purposes, scientific research and monitoring.

Cities, Palaces and Fortifications

Telavi is Kakheti’s cultural centre and a medieval city with a royal palace. The surviving palace served as a royal residence in the 17th and 18th centuries and now houses the Museum of King Heraclius (Erekle) II. In Mirzaani, the house museum of Niko Pirosmanashvili is also among the region’s cultural institutions.

The fortifications also differ in their form and history. Sighnaghi Fortress surrounds the entire city and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and the South Caucasus. The Gremi complex is a fortified city built on a hill in the 15th century. Davit Gareji, meanwhile, stretches over 25 kilometres and is known for its architecture and art. Bodbe Monastery is associated with Saint Nino.
