In Lagodekhi, marked trails and tours in the protected areas are as much a part of the travel experience as the region’s history at the museum. This offers two distinct focuses for your plans: time in nature and insights into the area’s nature, history and everyday life.
Trails and tours in the protected areas
The protected areas of Lagodekhi have marked trails as well as organized hiking, educational, horseback riding and cultural tours. The range extends from self-guided trails to guided activities on various themes. For children, there is a 600-meter nature interpretation trail in the administrative courtyard.
You can travel on foot or on horseback along the Black Rocks Lake Trail. The route includes designated picnic areas and places to camp. From there, you can enjoy views of the Caucasus Mountains and the Alazani Valley. Check current conditions before setting out.
The Black Grouse Waterfall Trail offers a different kind of scenery: it leads through untouched deciduous forest to the six-meter-high Rocho Waterfall. When choosing based on the experience you want, you can weigh views of the mountains and valley and the option to hike or ride against a forest trail leading to a waterfall.
The 4,500-hectare Lagodekhi Managed Reserve can be visited year-round. The season is therefore not in itself a reason to rule out a visit; however, you should still check local conditions before your trip.
Museum and regional history
The Lagodekhi Local History Museum was founded in 1975 and explores the nature, history and everyday life of the area. Five exhibition halls cover subjects including archaeology, ethnography and numismatics. These topics offer several perspectives on the region during a museum visit.
The archaeological collection spans the period from the 4th millennium BC to the late feudal period. One inventory lists 3,668 exhibits; this number may change. If you are planning a visit, check the latest access information in advance.
Machi is considered a medieval fortress with a family church and underground passages. Check the current access conditions before visiting here as well.
Getting there and planning your trip
Minibuses to Lagodekhi depart near Isani Metro Station in Tbilisi every half hour from 07:30. Since departure times may change, check the schedule again before your trip. This lets you plan your journey around the departures without assuming a travel time that has not been provided.
