Kvemo Alvani is one of the lowland settlements where Tush people live outside Tusheti. For travelers interested in culture and crafts, the village offers several specific points of interest: Kviratskhovloba Church, textile techniques, woodworking and wine. Visitor arrangements for workshops and tastings mentioned in a 2018 guidebook should be confirmed in advance.

Church and Village Character

Kviratskhovloba Church is a simple stone hall church with a peaceful courtyard and views of the mountains. Access from Akhmeta is considered easy. The church provides an architectural focal point for planning a visit, while crafts and wine offer other points of interest. Kvemo Alvani thus offers both a specific church building and textile and culinary themes to consider when planning a trip.

Workshops: Take Part or Watch

According to a 2018 guidebook, visitors can take part in felting, batik, block printing and carpet weaving at the Kvemo Alvani branch of the Aisi vocational school. At the Tursa woodworking workshop, they can watch wooden tableware being made and wood carving. The experiences are therefore quite different: at Aisi, taking part is the focus; at Tursa, it is watching.

The guidebook also mentions the textile studio at the Akhmeta/Kvemo Alvani Ethnographic Museum. There, visitors can card wool, spin yarn, do dry and wet felting, and knit. The Tushuri Pardagi workshop displays a loom, dyeing equipment and the natural plants used in the process. Its showroom offers carpets, runners and traditionally needle-knitted goods. Another traditional crafts workshop produces knitted and felt accessories, carpets, felt toys and enamel accessories. These offerings provide different kinds of insight, from hands-on experience with textiles to tools, materials and finished products.

Wine and Tastings

The 2018 guidebook also mentions “Granpa Zuraba’s wine cellar” at the Tushuri Pardagi workshop, where visitors can taste wine and other drinks. Itabani is an agrotourism farm in Kvemo Alvani with a vineyard and a cellar with a wine-tasting area. Tastings include wine and Tushetian guda cheese; wine tastings are also offered with lunch or dinner. Check visitor offerings and availability with Itabani before your trip.

Planning Tours and Your Journey

The Tusheti Protected Areas Administration has visitor service locations in Kvemo Alvani and Omalo. Travelers can plan different tours there and get information about available services. The administration offers overnight rooms, a cafeteria, a visitor center with an exhibition hall, a conference hall, and interpretation and information boards. The Tusheti Protected Areas operate eleven tourist routes covering large parts of Tusheti’s historical, cultural and natural landscape.

A resolution adopted by the Akhmeta Municipal Council on August 7, 2024, lists municipal bus routes connecting Akhmeta with Kvemo Alvani and Zemo Alvani via Alaverdi and other villages. Check whether the routes are currently operating before traveling. In the wider destination of Kakheti, the journey from Kvemo Alvani to Omalo is possible only by off-road vehicle. If Omalo is part of your plans, take this vehicle requirement into account when choosing how to travel.
