Mountain nature, village history and activities throughout the year shape Val-d'Isère. For planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you focus on downhill and cross-country skiing or summer excursions, cycling and hiking. A museum documenting the village’s development and facilities at the Centre Aquasportif add to the options.

Protected Mountain Landscape and Lac de l’Ouillette

South and east of Val-d'Isère, the Parc National de la Vanoise covers 5,240 hectares. Nearly 60 percent of the municipality’s area is protected under French environmental law. At the Col de l’Iseran, a biotope protection order safeguards the Leissières ridge and notable areas below the pass. Ibex and marmots are among the characteristic animals of the Vanoise.

Lac de l’Ouillette offers panoramic views of the Vanoise and is popular with hikers. You can reach the lake via the road to the Col de l’Iseran or by taking the free Solaise gondola. Trout fishing is also possible there: anyone can fish without a license, but a fishing fee is payable on site. Check seasonal access conditions before your visit.

Village History and Guided Tours

The traditional village of Val-d'Isère features stone buildings, and its bell tower dates back to 1664. The Musée Val d’Histoire traces the village’s development through traditional homes, the environment, the beginnings of skiing and the creation of the ski area. Its interactive design and texts in French and English make the museum interesting for visitors who speak different languages.

In summer, FACIM (Fondation Action Culturelle Internationale en Montagne) organizes guided tours of the village and its 17th-century buildings. They take place throughout the summer; check the current program for your travel dates. This lets you combine an insight into the history of the buildings with a visit to the museum, without conflating their subjects: the museum focuses on the village’s development, while the tours also explore its historic buildings.

Winter on the Slopes and Cross-Country Trails

The Tignes–Val d’Isère ski area provides access to more than 300 kilometers of slopes. Connections are available via the Tommeuses chairlift, the Col de Tovière or the Borsat chairlift, followed by a ski descent via the Col de Fresse. As lift connections and ski operations are seasonal, check current operations and conditions before setting out.

Another winter option is Lac de l’Ouillette when it is covered in snow: it has a 1.5-kilometer blue cross-country loop and a 4-kilometer red one. The two loops differ in both their designated color and length. This makes it possible to match the planned distance to the time available in advance; current snow and operating conditions remain a key factor.

Summer Activities at the Pass and Bike Park

The Tignes–Val d’Isère Bike Park has more than 220 kilometers of marked trails for beginners and experienced riders. As a seasonal facility, planning depends on opening dates and trail conditions; check these before your visit. Cyclists, motorcyclists and hikers also head to the Col de l’Iseran in summer. At 2,770 meters, it is the highest paved mountain pass in the Alps and the highest point on the Route des Grandes Alpes. The pass connects Val-d'Isère with Bonneval-sur-Arc; check seasonal road conditions before setting out.

Swimming, Wellness and Climbing

The Espace Plage at the Centre Aquasportif has a 25-meter sports pool and a 416-square-meter leisure pool. The wellness area has three hot tubs, three saunas and a steam room. If you want to include climbing in your trip plans, the Centre Aquasportif offers indoor climbing courses with routes up to 12 meters high for beginners and experienced climbers. Climbing sessions are scheduled seasonally; opening hours and access conditions may also change. So check the current offerings for your travel dates.

Getting Around Val-d'Isère

Val-Bus shuttles run regularly in Val-d'Isère in both winter and summer. For specific journeys, check the current routes and timetables, as both may change seasonally.
