A circular trail exploring the history of mining through seven themed stops, and an interactive route focused on military installations offer two different historical perspectives in Aiguebelle. There is also a riverside walk, a long-distance hiking trail starting in the town, and buildings with their own history. Aiguebelle thus combines cultural and historical discoveries with several types of route, from a walk of about an hour to a 127-kilometre trail.

Mining and Military History

The Petite Histoire des mines circular trail has seven themed stops between Aiguebelle and Argentine. A depiction of the year 1880 illustrates the work of the miners and the mining facilities. This puts both the people and the infrastructure of the mining industry in focus. Individual installations may change.

The interactive Secret Défense tour in Aiguebelle explores a different era: it covers the Maurienne’s military installations from the 1910s. In contrast to the depiction of 1880, the focus shifts from miners and mining facilities to military infrastructure and a later decade. The two experiences offer different historical perspectives rather than simply presenting the same subject in different forms.

For a playful way to discover the heritage, the Cœur de Villages initiative points visitors to the Nos Trésors Cachés activity booklet and the Petite Histoire des mines treasure hunt app. Digital materials may be updated, so if you plan to use the app, it is worth checking its current status in advance.

Walks and Hiking Trails

The educational La Fermette d’Emeline trail is a walk of about an hour, with eleven information boards along a safe riverside path. It is free and open to visitors at all times, every day. The boards provide information along the way; the approximate duration offers a practical guide for planning your time.

For a longer hike, the GR® 738 starts in Aiguebelle and runs 127 kilometres to Vizille. A shorter route is available to the Roc de Charbonnière: a developed, wooded path leads to the summit in about 15 minutes. The time estimates for the Roc and La Fermette d’Emeline apply to different routes and destinations; the 127 kilometres, meanwhile, describes the length of the GR® 738. Before setting out, check the latest conditions on the long-distance trail and the state of the path to the summit, as trail conditions may change.

Heritage at the Roc and the Chapel

The Roc de Charbonnière offers both a walking route and a historical connection: a castle on the rock is associated with the early history of the House of Savoy. The path to the summit passes through wooded terrain and is developed; the condition of the trail remains a practical consideration when planning the approximately 15-minute walk. If you are primarily interested in history, the particular point of interest here is the link between the castle and early Savoyard history.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Aiguebelle tells another chapter in the history of architecture. It was rebuilt as a neo-Gothic chapel between 1865 and 1868. The dates specify the period of reconstruction, while the style identifies its architectural classification. Together with the Roc, the chapel offers a second way to explore the built heritage: here, the focus is on a specific phase of construction; there, on a castle’s historical connection with the House of Savoy.
