A rammed-earth sacristy makes the Chapelle de Tramonet a distinctive feature of Belmont-Tramonet’s architectural history. The chapel is thought to have existed since around 1200; its interior was renovated in 2022. Rammed earth was widely used in the region from the mid-18th century to the mid-20th century. However, this technique is very rare as an extension to a religious building. The chapel thus brings together a history dated only approximately and an unusual application of a regional building method.

Churches and monastic history

The church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Belmont-Tramonet also has its own restoration history: its interior was restored between 2013 and 2015. The 19th-century painted decorations were also restored. This makes it possible to distinguish the more recent work on the church interior from the age of the paintings as two separate historical layers.

The community of La Rochette settled in Belmont-Tramonet at Pentecost 1970. The church of the La Rochette monastery is open to visitors; day visitors can attend all the sisters’ prayer times. Prayer times may vary on designated days of communal retreats. If you are planning to attend, schedule your visit around the specific times.

The shop at Abbaye Saint-Joseph de La Rochette sells selected monastic products from the MONASTIC network. As opening hours may change, check when the shop is open before visiting.

Events and local trails

The Chapelle de Tramonet is dedicated to Notre-Dame des Sept Douleurs. A mass is still celebrated there every year on September 15. This date provides a specific reference point when planning your stay; if you are planning your trip around the mass, it is advisable to check the event date before travelling.

For outdoor exercise, the municipality offers local walking trails for visitors. A fun discovery activity is the “jeu de piste belmontois,” created by the local youth council. The two activities offer different experiences: the trails take you on foot into the surrounding area, while the game focuses on discovering Belmont-Tramonet. You can decide which option better suits your travel interests.

Cycling, scenery and access

The ViaRhĂ´na is close to Belmont-Tramonet. If you would like to include cycling in your trip, you can take this proximity into account when choosing your destination. Molasse rock formations are among the landscape features at the Guiers crossing in Belmont-Tramonet. If you would like to explore the landscape as well as the churches and architectural history, this offers a specific point of interest.

The A43 motorway’s exit 11 at Belmont-Tramonet provides access by car to nearby villages and natural areas. You can therefore distinguish between different priorities when choosing your destination: cultural attractions include the restored church, the Chapelle’s architectural history and the monastery church, which is open to visitors. For outdoor activities, local walking trails and the ViaRhôna’s proximity offer separate planning options; the A43 exit makes it possible to continue on to destinations in the surrounding area.
