Discover Orelle on strolls between its hamlets or on more challenging routes to ridges and high-altitude lakes. The village comprises eleven authentic hamlets that visitors can explore on foot. Traditional buildings, nature trails and individual attractions offer different ways to experience your stay—from village history to mountain panoramas.

Hamlets, Architecture and Local History

The hamlets are home to washhouses, communal ovens, churches, chapels and stone houses. The Church of Saint Maurice dates back to the 15th century and is included in the “Chemins du baroque” (Baroque Routes). It offers a glimpse into the village’s architectural history, while the buildings scattered throughout the area shape the character of each hamlet.

The small Chez la Tante ecomuseum recreates a space from times gone by. It is open on request; arrange your visit in advance. Another way to explore the hamlets is Orelle Quest: this family smartphone adventure leads you through the villages with clues, puzzles and QR codes. Before your trip, check whether the installations are currently in place on site.

Another distinctive trace of the area’s culture is La Pierre aux Pieds, a group of rocks bearing engravings from several periods. The engravings and historic buildings draw attention to Orelle’s cultural heritage; hiking, by contrast, focuses on the alpine landscape, the trail network and the surroundings of the hamlets.

Strolls, Mountain Trails and Attractions

The hiking trail network ranges from family-friendly walks around the villages to more challenging routes to ridges and high-altitude lakes. It also includes trips to the Barrage de Bissorte and along the Tour du Thabor. The trails cross alpine pastures inhabited by marmots and dotted with flowering meadows, and offer panoramic views of the peaks. You can choose between a walk close to the village and a more demanding outing, without conflating the different destinations.

The Barrage de Bissorte can be reached on foot from the car park at Le Prec in about an hour. From there, you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains; the dam itself is not open to visitors. Access is seasonal and depends on snow conditions. Bear this restriction in mind when planning your outing, and distinguish the viewpoint from the inaccessible dam.

Another hiking idea combines nature observation with creative discovery: along the Sentiers Couleurs du Temps route from Noiray to Crêt du Vlé, there are stations for nature-marking workshops. They have seating and instructions for drawing motifs from nature. These stations give the route a different focus from trails that primarily lead to views of peaks, ridges or high-altitude lakes.

Chapel, Seasons and Landscape

The Notre Dame des Anges Chapel offers a view over the valley. It can be reached on foot via a forest path; in summer, the Arcelin forest track also leads there by car. A mass is held in the chapel once a year in August. When planning, take into account both the seasonal access via the forest track and the fixed date in the annual calendar.

For ski touring, La Trace du Loup is a marked and secured route starting from Plan Bouchet. Whether it can be operated depends on snow and weather conditions. The hiking options and this winter route therefore represent different activities and conditions; the suitability of one route cannot be inferred from that of another.

The landscape also includes clearly designated protected areas: the “Alpages du mont Bréquin” Natura 2000 site, which corresponds to the Vanoise Massif zone, lies within the municipality of Orelle. The “Landes, prairies et habitats rocheux du massif du mont Thabor” Natura 2000 site is located in the southern part of the municipality. Espace Caron 3200 has a wine bar serving selected fine wines and a restaurant serving local cuisine. Before your trip, check whether these visitor facilities are operating during your travel dates.
