The ViaRhôna passes through Sainte-Colombe; at the same time, the Rhône riverbank and several historic sites shape the character of the municipality. Vienne lies opposite. If you are considering Sainte-Colombe as a destination, three specific highlights can help guide your choice: riverside scenery, a regional cycle route and cultural history.

Rhône Riverbanks and the ViaRhôna

Sainte-Colombe extends from the Rhône riverbank to the eastern slopes of the Rhône Valley and lies opposite Vienne. The quays are pedestrian areas, relatively narrow and close to the buildings. They are suitable for walks; small pontoons bring passers-by close to the water. The buildings thus also shape the character of the riverside.

The Rhône quays provide access to river navigation, subject to the applicable regulations. The ViaRhôna passes through the town and is a major regional cycle route between Lake Geneva and the Mediterranean. As a greenway, it is also accessible to pedestrians and people with reduced mobility. This offers different options for planning: a walk along the quays or a cycle route with a regional reach.

Cultural History Across Several Periods

The early Christian mausoleum on Rue Cochard preserves rare early Christian wall paintings on its walls and vault. On 10 July 2008, it was classified as a French Monument historique. The surviving paintings give this building a tangible connection to Sainte-Colombe’s early Christian history.

The ruins of the Tour des Valois represent a different period. They date from a construction phase in 1343 and have been classified as a French Monument historique since 4 December 1919. In contrast with the mausoleum, the focus here is on the building history of a medieval structure. The historic bridge of Vienne can also be placed in context geographically: it stood opposite the Tour des Valois, on the Sainte-Colombe side.

The Verrière des Cordeliers adds the history of a former weaving mill to these historical points of interest; it was completely renovated in 2024. The 900-square-metre space lies on the Rhône riverbank, opposite the Gallo-Roman city of Vienne. The Verrière is well suited to exhibitions, concerts and performances.

A Gallo-Roman museum, built on a significant archaeological site, is also located at the municipal boundary. Sainte-Colombe also borders the Pilat Regional Natural Park. This location adds a connection to the wider landscape to the town’s riverside setting and its position opposite Vienne.

Sainte-Colombe as a Place to Stay

If you are looking for a hotel in Sainte-Colombe, your travel interests can help determine where to stay: if you would like to explore the quays on foot, the riverside is the main draw; if you are interested in a regional cycle route, the ViaRhôna offers a distinct focus. For trips centred on cultural history, the mausoleum, Tour des Valois, Verrière and museum provide specific points of interest.
