Francheville offers two different perspectives: the history of a castle on a rocky outcrop above the Yzeron Valley and outdoor activities in the park and by the river. Fort du Bruissin adds another historic site. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between architectural history, a map-based activity, a route with a specific distance and observing nature. The options appeal to different interests: would you like to learn about historic sites, or shape your time outdoors around a specific activity?
Castle, Rocky Outcrop and Fort
The remains of the castle, known as the “Vieux Château,” were built by Renaud du Forez, Archbishop of Lyon, in the late 12th or early 13th century. The rocky outcrop overlooking the Yzeron Valley provided a natural defensive position. This means the castle can be understood not only in terms of its date, but also by its position in the landscape: its relationship to the valley is an integral part of its history.
Fort du Bruissin represents a different period. It was built between 1878 and 1881 and is now a place of history and gathering. The comparison helps put both sites in context: the Vieux Château is defined by its early construction date and defensive position, while the fort also has its present-day role as a meeting place.
In the Park and Near the Yzeron
Aquavert Park has a free-to-access children's playground, picnic tables and a walking path. There is also an orienteering activity: use a map to find markers. The map challenge gives your visit a specific goal, setting it apart from the walking path and picnic tables. The picnic tables complement the walking path and map challenge by offering a place to take a break.
The “Francheville - En pleine nature PR®” route is 10.9 kilometres long and takes three hours; it runs as close as possible to the Yzeron. The route description published in 2024 gives this distance and duration. Trail conditions and markers may change, so check both before setting out. The three-hour duration gives you a concrete reference point when considering whether to make the hike the main focus of a day.
At the Grand Moulin de l’Yzeron, you can observe birds, insects and bees and dip your feet in the waters of the Yzeron. This combines observing nature with a direct activity by the water. Unlike a route, which requires you to plan for a specific distance and timeframe, this is about the things you can do at a particular place.
A Landmark Near the Train Station
L’IRIS is located next to Francheville train station. If you include this place in your plans, the station can serve as a specific landmark, and you can locate L’IRIS on a map of the area.
