A garden chessboard of 32 topiary figures, 18th-century paintings and three flight formats of different lengths offer various ways to discover Saint-Jean-Dʼardières. Cultural history, wine and flying appeal to different interests and fit different timeframes. To plan your trip, you can first decide which aspect interests you most; the specific offerings will help you plan visits and tastings.

Château Gardens and Art at the Château de Pizay

The Château de Pizay was first mentioned in documents from the Abbey of Cluny in 1030. André Le Nôtre laid out its French gardens in 1692. Today, 32 topiary figures form a life-size chessboard there. The dates therefore tell of different periods in the château’s history: from its first documented mention to the design of the gardens.

Two paintings at the Château de Pizay also add a distinctive touch: “La Naissance de Minerve” and “Minerve et Vulcain” date from the first half of the 18th century. Both are protected as items of property and were classified on 25 June 1996. If you are interested in art and historical context, the paintings offer a tangible connection to this period; the garden design, by contrast, dates to the late 17th century.

Admission to the gardens is free in 2026. Check the current admission conditions before your visit. This lets you plan the gardens as a separate activity without assuming admission costs that might apply in another year or under different conditions.

Wine Tastings and Different Appellations

The Château de Pizay estate includes 80 hectares of vineyards spanning several appellations. The tasting area in the wine shop at the Domaine du Château de Pizay offers an opportunity to discover the château’s wines. The vineyards give an indication of the range of appellations, while the tasting area puts the wines themselves at the center.

The Domaine de Grande Ferrière offers tastings and wine sales. The selection includes Morgon and Côte de Brouilly, as well as red, rosé and white Beaujolais wines. It also includes “Cuvée réservée,” made in the traditional style, and grape juice. The selection therefore covers several named wines, different Beaujolais colors and a non-alcoholic option.

At the Cave de Bel-Air Vinescence in Saint-Jean-Dʼardières, you can taste and buy wine. The cooperative winery was founded in 1929. Wine tastings and sales at the Domaine du Château Cambon are by appointment. Its selection includes Beaujolais, Beaujolais Blanc, Brouilly, Fleurie and Morgon. Arrange your visit in advance; appointment arrangements may change.

The wine offerings mentioned differ in their focus: Pizay features the château’s wines, Grande Ferrière lists a broad selection including different Beaujolais colors, and Cambon lists five named wines or appellations. If you are planning a tasting, you can choose according to the focus you prefer and take the appointment requirement at Cambon into account.

Choose a Flying Experience by Duration

The Sur l’Air du Temps school offers three flight formats: 15-minute introductory flights, 30-minute sightseeing flights and one-hour flying excursions. The durations make it easy to compare the time commitment for each format without setting aside a whole day. Consider whether you would like a brief introduction or prefer to allow more time for a flight.

Introductory and advanced courses are also available for ultralight aircraft and hot-air balloons. The offerings therefore include both individual flights and courses focused on learning the basics or developing your skills. Two questions can help you choose: How much time would you like to spend flying, and are you more interested in a flight or a course? Check the latest details about the offerings in advance.
