Condrieu brings together a river landscape, vineyards and buildings from several eras. The Rhône and the Arbuel, Bassenon and Vernon rivers shape the townscape; the Tour Garon and the Visitation convent point to different chapters of its history. When planning your trip, it’s worth deciding what you’d like to focus on first: are you most interested in heritage, Viognier and winegrowing, or a summer swimming activity? These options differ both in theme and season.

River landscape and routes

Condrieu lies in the Parc Naturel du Pilat on the right bank of the Rhône. The Rhône and the Arbuel, Bassenon and Vernon rivers shape the landscape and the characteristic neighborhoods once inhabited by boatmen. The river landscape and the town’s history can be considered together: the waterways shape the scenery and are also connected with the historic boatmen’s quarters. One specific viewpoint is the castle gate, which overlooks the Arbuel, Condrieu and the Rhône.

The former towpath in Condrieu is now part of the ViaRhôna cycling route. Its historic name and its role in today’s cycling network thus come together along the same stretch. Those interested in cycling trips and the history of the river landscape will find two fitting ways to experience the area here.

Heritage from several eras

The Tour Garon is the only surviving building of Condrieu’s 12th-century feudal castle. Another viewpoint is the castle gate, which offers views of the Arbuel, Condrieu and the Rhône. The Visitation convent dates from a later era. The de Villars family had it built in 1664; it was one of the first convents of the Visitandines. The chapel is used for exhibitions and concerts. The convent estate is privately owned.

The Maison du Gouverneur de la Gabelle is also part of the town’s architectural history. This Renaissance building originally served a function related to the salt tax. It is currently not open to visitors. Condrieu is therefore home to various historical landmarks from different periods: the 12th-century feudal castle, the Visitation convent built in the 17th century and the Renaissance building.

Viognier, winegrowing and an event

The Condrieu wine appellation is made exclusively from Viognier; Condrieu is also the origin of this grape variety. The winegrowing area covers around 180 hectares of vineyards in production on steep slopes, where the vines are grown in chaillées. Two aspects of winegrowing can be distinguished here: Viognier identifies the appellation’s grape variety, while the area and sloping terrain describe the cultivated winegrowing landscape.

The two appellations hold their joint event, “Vin et Rigotte de Condrieu en fête,” every year on May 1. This May event offers a different seasonal focus from the summer swimming activities. If you’d like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the latest event information in advance.

Summer swimming

Wam Park Lyon Condrieu has a sandy beach. Supervised swimming is available there from 2 to 6 p.m. in July and August. This activity, which is limited to a specific season and time of day, is a practical option for anyone hoping to swim during their stay. Plan your trip accordingly and check the details before you visit.
