Velanne combines an elevated plateau with natural and historical attractions. Mont de Velanne forms the centre of the plateau, with far-reaching views to the east over the Chartreuse Massif and to the north towards Bugey and Épine. Hiking trails pass named sites, while wetlands and waterways offer further ways to discover the landscape. When planning your visit, you can choose different focuses: views, nature and local heritage.
Plateau, Views and Nature
The elevated plateau defines Velanne. Mont de Velanne forms its centre, and the views stretch far in two directions: east towards the Chartreuse Massif and north towards Bugey and Épine. This landscape is a great starting point for getting to know Velanne not only through individual sights, but also through its setting on the plateau.
Nature also offers its own points of interest during your stay. The municipality’s hiking trails let you discover local fauna and flora up close. In the Boisements humides du Malafossant wetland forest, shade-loving saxifrages and ferns find suitable conditions to thrive. The Malafossant is designated a ZNIEFF along its entire course between Velanne and Saint-Jean-d’Avelanne. Another Type I ZNIEFF includes the wooded, cool and damp banks of the Rajans, Caron and Combe Pigna streams.
Hiking Trails and a Cultural Route
Velanne’s hiking trails pass the Sacré Cœur and the Tour O’Mahony. For a route with a specific destination, there is the Le Sacré Cœur hike: it starts in nearby Saint-Bueil, crosses Velanne’s hilly plateau and continues to the Sacré Cœur site. This creates a clear connection between the plateau and the site; the municipality’s trails also offer access to the local flora and fauna.
The Via Sancti Martini offers a different perspective. It follows in the footsteps of Saint Martin and is certified as a Council of Europe Cultural Route. If you would like to include cultural routes alongside the landscape in your travel plans, it complements the hikes to local sights with a wider regional connection.
Historic Sites in Velanne
Today, only ruins of the Tour O’Mahony on Mont de Velanne remain, surrounded by forest. The building was a hunting lodge constructed in the 19th century. During the First World War, it served as accommodation for a small detachment of soldiers. The ruins thus connect a specific historic site with the woodland landscape.
The Église de Velanne was built on the site of an old castle. It was blessed in 1845 and completed in 1877. A recurring event is also part of the local heritage: Velanne’s patronal feast takes place on 26 December in honour of Saint Étienne and remains a village tradition. Together, the church, the lodge ruins and the feast day offer different ways to discover Velanne’s history.
By E-Bike and Public Transport
The Les plateaux de Haute-Valdaine loop has specific route details for a bike ride: it is an easy 26.6-kilometre e-bike route with 550 metres of ascent. From Montferrat, the loop reaches Velanne via Route du Mont de Velanne. The distance and ascent give you a basis for deciding whether this ride suits your plans.
If you are using public transport, the Velanne Centre stop is a specific point of reference: it is served by line E of the Pays Voironnais network. Check the line’s timetable before travelling.
