More than 50 percent of Mizoën’s municipal area belongs to the Natura 2000 site “Marais à laîche bicolore, prairies de fauche et habitats rocheux du Ferrand et du Plateau d’Emparis”. This protected status is therefore a defining feature of the landscape you can discover here.
Protected landscapes and nature destinations
The Plateau d’Emparis is designated as a classified site to protect remarkable landscapes and is preserved from development and damage caused by human activities. At the same time, it is a flower-rich alpine pasture plateau. The Plateau d’Emparis offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountain ranges and their glaciers. The combination of landscape protection, open alpine pastures and far-reaching panoramas gives the plateau a special place among the municipality’s nature attractions.
Wildlife is also part of the Natura 2000 site: species found there include marmots, chamois, bearded vultures, golden eagles and alpine gentians. At Lac Lovitel, the habitat provides favorable conditions for amphibians to thrive. The site is also home to the common adder’s-tongue fern and the rue-leaved meadow-rue; both plants are protected at regional level. These examples range from animal species to rare plants.
Another distinctive landscape feature is the Fontaine Pétrifiante, a natural cascade at an altitude of 1,750 meters in the municipality of Mizoën. It can be seen from the GR54C. Its tufa formation is protected by a prefectural biotope protection order and is included in the European Natura 2000 network. The cascade, tufa formation and protected status describe different aspects of the same nature destination.
Summer destinations and seasonal activities
In summer, the Les Clots area and the Plateau d’Emparis are among the main places to visit in Mizoën. For tour planning, the GR 54 variant also passes through the municipality; it is part of the Tour de l’Oisans et des Écrins. In winter, ski touring and snowshoeing are popular on the Plateau d’Emparis. The plateau’s seasonal use therefore varies considerably: these winter activities complement its summer appeal as a destination for outings.
For a longer hike, there is the “Tour du plateau d’Emparis depuis Mizoën”: a difficult, four-day circular route covering 43.7 kilometers on GR and PR trails. As a multi-day hike, it is a distinct focus for trip planning. Trail conditions and seasonal access can change with the weather and snow conditions, so check the latest conditions before planning your hike.
Another activity follows a waterfall: the Via ferrata du Voile de la Mariée climbs alongside the waterfall to the Refuge des Clots. Before setting out, check whether access is currently possible. The region’s outdoor offerings are not limited to hiking trails, and the routes also differ clearly in duration and type of activity.
Cultural heritage and when to visit
Mizoën is home to the Les Clots ecomuseum. A traditional bread oven is also part of the village’s cultural heritage. Along with the nature and outdoor activities, these attractions add a cultural dimension to your trip, without limiting your stay to just one way of exploring the area.
For an additional reason to visit in summer, you could include the Festival des randonnées musicales in the Ferrand Valley. It has been held there every summer since 1999, with events in July and August. Check the program for your travel dates if you want to plan your trip around it.
If you’re looking for hotels for a stay in Mizoën, it helps to decide on your dates and main focus first: summer outings, winter activities and the festival in the Ferrand Valley each call for different planning priorities. For the four-day circular hike, consider its full length and the weather-dependent trail conditions; for a festival visit, the program for the relevant year is key.
