Bilieu’s western side lies on the shore of Lac de Paladru. The area is also shaped by hiking trails, historic buildings, and cultural activities. This gives you several ways to explore the area on your trip—from the lake and surrounding landscape to local history.

Lakeshore and Trails Around Bilieu

Swimming is possible along Bilieu’s waterfront. At the same time, swimming, water sports, and fishing on Lac de Paladru are regulated to protect biodiversity. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check the current rules before your visit. This way, you can take the regulations into account rather than assuming the lake can be used without restrictions.

Bilieu’s hiking trails are considered suitable for walks, horseback rides, and bike rides, and lead to viewpoints. One specifically named route is the loop to the Croix des Cochettes, which offers panoramic views of Lac de Paladru. At the main junctions, it is signposted with yellow markings and direction posts. While the trails connect different activities and viewpoints, this loop focuses on a specific destination, views of the lake, and wayfinding at the junctions. These are different aspects to consider when planning your routes.

Church, Weaving Mill, and Rammed Earth

Bilieu’s history is reflected in its architectural and cultural heritage. Over time, buildings made of rammed earth were added to the hamlets, starting around 1400. Rammed earth is compacted soil used as a building material, and represents a different construction method from Saint Alban Church or the Tissage de Bilieu weaving mill.

Saint Alban Church in Bilieu was mentioned in 1172 as being dependent on Saint-Chef Abbey. The present-day church was inaugurated on November 12, 1840, following its reconstruction. The two dates mark different milestones: the 1172 reference describes its ecclesiastical dependence at the time, while 1840 marks the inauguration of the rebuilt church that stands today. The weaving mill also has a clear historical date: Tissage de Bilieu began operating in 1924. The area’s history thus encompasses ecclesiastical ties, a building tradition that developed over centuries in the hamlets, and an industrial beginning in the 20th century.

Cultural Activities and Trip Planning

Café des Eaux Sauvages was inaugurated in March 2025 and offers creative workshops and cultural events. The program may change. The intercommunal Lac Culture festival is organized by Bilieu, Charavines, Chirens, and Montferrat, supported by the Isère Department, and features artists. If you would like to include any of these activities in your plans, check the latest dates and programs before your visit.

When looking for a holiday rental in Bilieu, you could first consider which aspect of the area you want to focus on during your trip: the lakeshore, activities on the trails, or its architectural and cultural history. If your stay includes activities on the lake, you should also check the applicable regulations. If cultural events are important to your plans, consult the latest programs. This will help you choose what to focus on based on the specific options Bilieu offers.
