Le Freney-Dʼoisans is a mountain village whose attractions are spread across small hamlets, traces of its culture and mountain destinations. When planning a stay, you can choose between different activities: a route through the village and its hamlets, a hike with summit views, or climbing at the Site d'escalade de Saint-Arey.

Hamlets and traces of local history

The mountain village is surrounded by small hamlets. Chapels and oratories are scattered throughout Le Freney-Dʼoisans, so you can find them in several places in the village. Remains of the ancient Roman road are also nearby. The history of the colporteurs is another part of the town's rich heritage and offers a further way to explore its past.

The Circuit des fontaines et des oratoires explores Le Freney-Dʼoisans, its hamlets and its heritage through a series of little games. It starts at the Église Saint-Arey, passes through the old hamlet of La Combe and reaches a basin next to a shaded square. The route thus leads from the village and its heritage sites to a specific destination in the hamlet. Those interested in local history will find a different focus here than on a tour whose main goal is mountain views.

Hikes with different highlights

The Croix de Cassini stands at 2,361 metres and offers a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding peaks and mountain ranges. The site is also associated with a historical story: the Croix is linked to the 17th-century mapping of this part of the Massif des Écrins by the geographer Cassini. The hike there from the Col de Sarenne is 4.6 kilometres round trip, takes 2 hours and 15 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 421 metres. Some sections are exposed. Check route information and mountain conditions before setting out.

The La Courbe hike takes you through a different landscape, leading to the La Courbe site on the sunny slope of the Massif des Grandes Rousses. Below the Bec de l’Aigle, hikers may be able to spot chamois, though a sighting is not guaranteed. This tour therefore differs from the hike to the Croix de Cassini both in its landscape and in the nature experience it may offer.

Climbing at the Site de Saint-Arey

The Site d'escalade de Saint-Arey is located at an altitude of 987 metres in the hamlet of La Grange, below the Église Saint-Arey. The 21 climbing routes face south or southeast, are between 15 and 25 metres high, and are graded from 3 B to 7 B. There is also a Via corda, which is largely suitable for beginners and family climbing. Check the current conditions at the site before climbing; the route details given here are no substitute for assessing conditions on the ground.

Staying and finding your way around

When looking for accommodation for your stay, start by considering whether you want to focus mainly on village culture, mountain views or climbing. The hike to the Croix de Cassini offers a specific timeframe and landscape, with its stated duration and exposed sections; by contrast, the Circuit des fontaines et des oratoires takes you through the village and its hamlets. These different focuses can help you plan your outings around your interests.

Oisans Tourisme brings together tourist information about the municipalities of Oisans and also provides information about Le Freney-Dʼoisans. It is a useful point of reference for finding your way around and learning more about the village and what it offers.
