The Prieuré de Salaise combines a long local history with a cultural role today: it serves as a venue for concerts and exhibitions. Salaise-sur-Sanne is also a specific stop for cyclists, as the ViaRhôna runs through the commune. Cultural history and cycling therefore offer two different reasons to consider Salaise-sur-Sanne as a destination for your stay.

The Priory and its History

The origins of the Prieuré de Salaise date back to the Carolingian period. The choir and crypt are classified as historic monuments. The priory’s cultural use and the protected status of these two parts describe different aspects of the site: contemporary cultural offerings and historic heritage come together here.

Another historical feature is the enclosed garden in front of the prior’s house. In the 10th century, it served as a botanical garden for medicinal purposes. This former use adds a specific aspect to the history of the priory, alongside its classified features and its current role as a cultural venue.

Bridge, Church and Architecture

The Pont des Moines is the oldest bridge in Salaise and dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. The church of Saint Juste belongs to a later building period: the neo-Romanesque basilica was built in the town center between 1877 and 1882. Comparing the two structures brings different periods of local history to life—from the medieval bridge to the 19th-century church.

La Rebatière is also associated with a specific year. Antoine Régis Rebat, Lord of Ozon, first built it as a fortified farm in 1453. La Rebatière retains an Italian-influenced architectural character. Its cited features include a gateway, machicolations, a pepper-pot tower and a fine Dauphiné-style porch. Its former function and the named architectural details provide two different points of reference for understanding this part of local history.

Industrial History Across Municipal Boundaries

The Cités ouvrières add the region’s residential and industrial history to the architectural story. The neighborhood extends across Salaise-sur-Sanne and Roussillon. It was built between 1920 and 1948 for the families of workers at the nearby Rhône-Poulenc factories and, later, Rhodiacéta. Unlike a single monument, the historical context here lies in a neighborhood spanning two communes and associated with employees’ families.

ViaRhôna and Local Routes

ViaRhôna Stage 11 runs from Saint-Romain-en-Gal or Vienne to Sablons, passing through Salaise-sur-Sanne. The route is signposted with the EuroVelo 17 symbol. It can be used year-round when weather conditions are favorable. Bear this qualification in mind when planning your ride: the time of year alone does not determine whether the stated conditions are met.

The Chemin du Châtet is designated for a different kind of use. It is closed to motorized vehicles such as cars and quad bikes and can be used on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The information about the two routes therefore differs clearly: for the ViaRhôna, the focus is on the stage, signage and weather condition; for the Chemin du Châtet, the permitted ways of getting around and the ban on motorized vehicles are key.

Regional Buses

Regional bus services are also part of getting around locally. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region’s buses serve seven stops in Salaise-sur-Sanne. As you weigh up your travel plans, the town therefore offers both a described cycling route and regional buses as distinct transport options.
