Panissage’s history unfolds over different timescales: the older church bell was baptized in 1765, while the bell tower was not completed until 1929–1930. There are also pottery classes, a historic distillery and seasonal cuisine. A stay here brings together religious heritage, craftsmanship and local dining options.

Church and Religious Heritage

The church of Panissage is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was built in the late 1880s at the private initiative of Abbé Villemin. Its older bell had already been baptized in 1765; the bell tower was completed in 1929–1930. The bell, church building and later completion of the tower can therefore be understood as separate stages in the history of the village.

The stained-glass windows also add to the history of the building. They were probably created around the time of construction or shortly afterward; two bear the signature of Buche, a stained-glass artist from Grenoble. This adds an artistic and craft-related dimension to the construction and bell dates. The dating is explicitly an estimate.

Pottery Classes and Local Cuisine

The Emmanuelle Texier pottery studio offers workshops for adults and children. Weekly adult classes take place on Mondays and Wednesdays; this schedule does not necessarily apply to the children’s classes. As class times may change, confirm your preferred date in advance. Also call before you travel to make sure the potter will be there.

La Guinguette serves cuisine based on seasonal ingredients and products from local producers. As the offering may change, ask about current options if you are planning a specific visit.

Les volailles de Sarapin offers a specific product: locally raised free-range poultry, sold directly to visitors at the farm. A municipal listing dated November 12, 2025 describes this direct sale. Check in advance whether it will be available during your visit.

The two culinary options are distinct: La Guinguette’s cuisine is shaped by seasonal ingredients and local producers, while the farm shop focuses on a specific product. You can choose based on whether seasonal cuisine or buying free-range poultry directly is more important to your plans.

Railway Station and Industrial History

Panissage railway station was built around 1862 when the Lyon–Grenoble railway line was established. If you are considering travelling by train, check current services separately.

The industrial history includes a Bigallet distillery established in Panissage in 1885. The station and the distillery represent different historical chapters: the establishment of the railway line in one case, and the local distillery in the other. Chronologically, the distillery was established around two decades after the station was built.

The topics also differ in their relevance to planning your stay: the history of the church, station and distillery can be placed in context using historical dates; class times, the potter’s availability, the farm shop and La Guinguette’s seasonal offering should be confirmed in advance. If one of these offerings is a deciding factor for your trip, it is best to check before planning the rest of your day.
