If you are considering Valbonnais as a destination, you can plan your stay around three distinct themes: the lake, routes with clearly stated distances and elevation gains, and the town’s historical landmarks. Options range from a roughly half-hour walk around the lake to routes lasting several hours.
At the Valbonnais lake
The Plan d’eau de Valbonnais is a leisure and recreation centre just below the village. It is set in natural surroundings near the River La Bonne and away from main roads. The lake is open year-round. Swimming, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are possible there.
The seasonal rental service is separate: every summer, the Association Sport Bien-Etre et Loisirs (ASBEL) rents out stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and canoes, and organises outings for children, teenagers and adults. Check what is available for the relevant season before your visit.
The walk around the lake takes about 30 minutes on foot. It passes through a section of woodland to the Pont des Verneys, then follows the campsite back to the lake. This makes it a shorter option than the routes lasting several hours in the local area.
Compare routes by duration and difficulty
The routes differ in length, duration, elevation gain and difficulty. These details provide a concrete basis for distinguishing shorter outings from longer routes:
- The Valbonnais–Entraigues–Valbonnais circular hike is listed as 14.6 km, taking 3 hours and 20 minutes, with 167 metres of elevation gain.
- The Tour du Village is 1.4 km long, takes 40 minutes according to the listing, has 45 metres of elevation gain and is rated as easy.
- The Chemin du Béalier covers 3.64 km, takes 1 hour and 30 minutes and has 70 metres of elevation gain; it is rated as easy.
- The Parcours VTT du Triathlon Famille is 8.5 km long, takes 1 hour and 45 minutes, has 70 metres of elevation gain and is rated as easy.
- Des Angelas Ă La Roche par le canal is 3 km long, takes 1 hour and 30 minutes, has 200 metres of elevation gain and is rated as moderately difficult.
- The Tour du Rocher Rond covers 2.5 km, takes 1 hour and 30 minutes and has 100 metres of elevation gain. It is rated as difficult because of steep sections.
- The Boucle des Verneys is 10 km long, takes 3 hours and 45 minutes, has 250 metres of elevation gain and is rated as moderately difficult.
The difference between the 40-minute Tour du Village and the 3-hour-45-minute Boucle des Verneys makes the range of times involved clear. The Tour du Rocher Rond’s rating also shows why distance alone is not enough: despite being only 2.5 km, its steep sections mean it is rated as difficult.
The route itself is also a useful guide: the Chemin du Béalier starts at the Supérette car park and follows the 14th-century Canal des Moines. The Parcours VTT starts at the lake, passes through the woods along the left bank of the Bonne to the Pont des Fayettes, and returns along the opposite bank. The De Rif-Bruyant à Entraigues hiking stage passes through the wild Rif Bruyant valley and the peaceful Roizonne valley to the centre of Valbonnais and the lake; it then follows the Canal des Moines to Entraigues. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Historical landmarks and culture
The Château Freynet, also known as Château d’en bas, dates from 1608. In the Sauzet district, the manor house known as Champollion is considered to be the former family home of the younger branch of the Alleman family. The manor house and its outbuildings were sold in 1752 to Jean Baptiste Bernard, a royal notary in Valbonnais.
Chabrand is also part of the town’s history: at the beginning of the 18th century, the hamlet was one of the outlying settlements with a chapel. The Les Montagn’Arts festival features theatre, songs, readings, poetry, circus and creative workshops. The programme varies from one edition to another.
If you are looking for a hotel in Valbonnais, you can shape your stay around your preferred mix of water, routes and local history. The different route durations can help you distinguish a shorter outing from an excursion lasting several hours.
