Laffrey combines water-based recreation, an important site in Napoleon’s history, and walking trails with different features. If you are planning an overnight stay in Laffrey, first consider whether water sports, history, or a particular type of trail will shape your days. You can then choose activities and routes to suit your interests.

Lakes with different options

At Great Laffrey Lake, designated beaches are used for relaxation and water sports. The lake has two water sports centers and a naturist center. Facilities and operating arrangements may vary seasonally, so check in advance what is relevant to your visit. The lake is also a natural site of tourist and historical interest.

Lac Mort is very different: it is an artificial lake and a hydropower site. Swimming is strictly prohibited there. This distinction is important when planning your visit: Great Laffrey Lake is associated with relaxation and water sports, while Lac Mort serves a different purpose and must not be used for swimming.

History and nature in Laffrey

The Prairie de la Rencontre is where Napoleon met the troops sent by Louis XVIII to stop him on March 7, 1815. A 700-meter walking path there is accessible to people with reduced mobility and to strollers. Six information points along the path describe the history of the site; their content may be updated over time. Check current access information before your visit.

The Marais de la Pivodière sector offers a different focus on nature. It includes reed beds and aquatic vegetation, as well as waterbirds, fish, and dragonflies. So, in addition to its lakes and recreational activities, Laffrey also offers a specific opportunity to explore wetland vegetation and wildlife.

Walking trails for views and underfoot conditions

The “Le Tour des 4 lacs” circuit passes through Laffrey. “Au pays des lacs de Laffrey” is an easy, family-friendly walk with very beautiful views of the Laffrey lakes. If trail conditions are important to your plans, the “Rando-poussette: le lac Mort” walk offers another option: it follows a flat dirt and gravel path and is considered suitable for children.

The family-friendly “Le tour du lac Mort” loop is a separate route. It offers distinctive views of Grenoble and the surrounding mountain ranges. The trails described here therefore differ in their specific features: one route focuses on views of the lakes, another on a flat dirt and gravel surface, and the loop on views of Grenoble and the mountains. Trail and road conditions can change with the weather, so check them before setting out.

Getting there and practical information

From Grenoble, the route to Matheysine follows the A48 and then the N85 via Vizille and Laffrey. Road conditions and recommended routes may change, so check the latest information before driving. There is an electric vehicle charging station in Grandes Saignes. As infrastructure and availability can change, check availability before planning a charging stop.
