If you’d like to explore geological traces in Rencurel, the “Mémoire de roche” educational trail offers a practical starting point: it leads to the Fossil Valley, and explanatory sheets and information panels help you understand the visible features on site. The focus is therefore not only on covering the route, but also on how to read the geological landscape.

Landscape and Fossils in the Vallée Fossile des Rimets

The Vallée Fossile des Rimets lies at an altitude of 1,100 metres. Meadows, lapiaz and beech forest shape the landscape; the dry grasslands are home to numerous butterflies and orchids. The area thus combines geological interest with a diverse range of flora and fauna. Its rural and historical significance is also one of the valley’s defining features.

Fossils are another key feature: the valley has an exceptional wealth of different fossils. It is also the only geological “Espace naturel sensible” in the Isère department. Visitors looking to discover different aspects of a landscape will find more than a geological curiosity here: plant life, wildlife and rural history are also among its defining themes.

Hiking and Mountain Biking Stages

Stage 2 of the GR de Pays “Le tour des Coulmes” runs from Malleval-en-Vercors through the forests and clearings of Les Coulmes, before reaching Rencurel. This is a different way to include the area in a longer route than a visit focused on the educational trail and the Fossil Valley: here, forest and clearing sections shape the route.

For mountain bikers, Stage 5 of the GTV VTT Rencurel / Autrans starts in Rencurel. It is 25.9 kilometres long, includes 1,207 metres of elevation gain and is rated difficult; the stated duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes. These route details provide a concrete reference for planning your ride. The stage therefore differs from the GR de Pays route both in activity and in its stated length and difficulty.

Winter Sports in the Les Coulmes Area

The Les Coulmes area has more than 50 kilometres of cross-country ski trails for classic and skate skiing. They run from Presles to Rencurel. Winter conditions can affect operations, so check the latest information before your arrival. The Les Coulmes downhill ski area at Col de Romeyère in Rencurel has three ski lifts, a beginner conveyor belt and slopes of varying difficulty.

Snowshoe hikes also start in Rencurel: Les Coulmes has several marked routes, ranging from beginner to challenging levels. Which one is right for you also depends on snow conditions. In winter, access to the Les Coulmes downhill ski area and the Belvédère is via Col de Romeyère near Rencurel. When there is snow, the road du Mont Noir between the two sectors is closed to traffic; take this restriction into account when planning your journey and check road conditions before setting off.

Climbing Areas in Rencurel

There are three climbing areas in Rencurel equipped with climbing routes: La crique, Cordet/Collavet and Rocher de Gonson. If you plan to visit one of them, check the conditions and the state of the equipment on site. This means your choice of climbing area remains dependent on the conditions at the time, while the three names clearly distinguish the available destinations.
