At Col de l’Arzelier, Château-Bernard reveals itself as a mountain destination of forests, meadows and alpine pastures. Depending on the route, you can enjoy walks or hikes. When choosing a stay, consider the range of outdoor experiences: forest sections on the Boucle des Clos, distant views from the Crête de la Ferrière, and the panoramic views and historical significance of Pas de la Balme. An orienteering course for adults and a seasonal toboggan run add to the options. You can tailor your stay to the scenery, culture and activities you’re looking for.

Forest trails and distant views

The Boucle des Clos is marked with yellow-and-green PR trail markers and partly follows the Balcon-Est trail through the forest. The markers provide a clear point of reference, while the forest section shapes the route’s character. After weather events or trail work, it’s a good idea to check the local trail markers before setting out.

The Crête de la Ferrière starts at Col de l’Arzelier and offers views of Mont Aiguille and the Trièves. Here, the distant views take center stage, whereas part of the Boucle route leads through the forest. Visibility of Mont Aiguille and the Trièves depends on the weather and can vary accordingly.

Panoramas, history and nature

The route to Pas de la Balme leads to a panorama with a 360-degree view; visibility depends on the weather. Pas de la Balme was an important site of resistance for the Maquis du Vercors. Near the rock face, you can look out for ibex. Even when visibility is limited, the site’s historical significance remains a distinct aspect of the outing. The viewpoints are different: from the Crête, the named distant sights are Mont Aiguille and the Trièves, while the route to Pas de la Balme leads to a panoramic view in every direction.

More activities and getting there

An orienteering course for adults offers a different way to discover Château-Bernard’s natural and cultural heritage than the marked hiking trails and scenic routes. Maps are available free of charge from the Point Information Tourisme (PIT) at Col de l’Arzelier, near Altebike. Before travelling, briefly check whether this collection option is still available.

The toboggan run at Col de l’Arzelier is free of charge. It operates seasonally and depends on snow conditions. Plan any visit around the season and snow conditions, and check in advance whether it is operating.

For a cycling climb to Col de l’Arzelier, TER station Vif can serve as a starting point. Bicycles may be carried on the TER, subject to checking in advance. If you plan to travel this way, check the bicycle transport conditions before departure. This lets you combine the cycling climb with a TER journey, provided you have checked in advance that bicycles can be carried.
