Espace Pasteur combines cultural uses with the town’s older history. It houses the 508 m² Fabrique Musicale and a 180 m² auditorium, where exhibitions and conferences, among other events, can be held. The site stands on the location of a former Benedictine priory, destroyed by fire in the 12th century. The restored Château du Colombier can be visited during European Heritage Days.
Churches and Pilgrimage History
Notre Dame d’Heyrieux was built at its present location in 1894. Its bell tower contains two bells: one dates from 1789, weighs 459 kg and is considered the oldest in the Isère département; the second dates from 1817 and weighs 199 kg. Another historic trace leads to the former church, described as “conventuelle.” It was once a pilgrimage destination, especially on the Feast of the Assumption.
The Notre-Dame de la Salette oratory was built above Heyrieux. It commemorates the apparition of the Virgin Mary on 19 September 1846 in La Salette, in the Isère département near Corps. Four cylindrical stone columns support a flat roof; three white-painted cast-iron statues stand on a high stone plinth. From Notre-Dame de la Salette, the panorama stretches across the Lyon plain and takes in the foothills of Grenay, Satolas, Colombier and Crémieu, the Montagnes de l’Huis and the Jura noir.
On 19 September, the anniversary of the apparition, many faithful continue to climb in procession to Notre-Dame de la Salette to pray there. If you are planning to attend, check the dates in advance.
The Foire de la Sainte Catherine
The Foire de la Sainte Catherine was established in 1544 by a royal patent issued by François 1er. It takes place every year on the Saturday closest to 25 November. The traditional programme includes a parade of the Catherinettes: the municipality provides hats, which are individually decorated, and a banda accompanies the parade. The programme may vary from year to year, so check the dates for your visit.
Walks and Trails
The municipality’s walking information features outings on foot, on horseback and by bicycle. Along the way, visitors can discover landscapes and local heritage, including chapels, market halls and fortified houses. The trails are signposted with yellow directional markers in accordance with the PDIPR charter. Check trail conditions before setting out.
In the wider region around Heyrieux, the Coll’in walking network extends for more than 250 km across ten municipalities. Its extent may change as trails are updated. Parc de la Fraternité offers something different: it is the municipality’s public health trail, has play areas for children and is fully enclosed.
Getting There
Heyrieux can be reached via the A43 and A46 motorways, as well as via Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport and its TGV station. Before setting off, check which route suits your travel plans.
