Chirens brings together a protected wetland, Romanesque architecture and medieval fortifications. During a stay, you can explore a range of attractions: the Marais du Val d’Ainan, the Prieuré de Chirens, and the fortification of Le Châtelard and the Tour de Clermont. These places offer different perspectives on the commune—through its habitats, sacred art and the development of medieval fortifications.

Explore the Marais du Val d’Ainan

The Marais du Val d’Ainan near Chirens is an important breeding ground for migratory birds and a habitat for many amphibians and notable orchids. A themed trail measuring 1,800 metres allows visitors to explore the area independently and with their families. The trail’s length provides a clear framework for this nature visit; the focus is on the wetland’s habitats and their diverse groups of plants and animals.

Yellow markings provide guidance along the Les marais de Chirens circular trail. Direction signs are placed at the main junctions. These are useful reference points for anyone who wants to follow the route along the way. The wayfinding complements the themed approach to the wetland, without limiting the visit to observing just one animal or plant species.

Romanesque priory and summer programme

The Prieuré de Chirens is an 11th-century Romanesque priory decorated with frescoes, listed as a historic monument and open to visitors. It was restored in 1964 by the artist Roger Lorin; since then, it has been devoted to visual art and music. The priory also welcomes musicians and visual artists every summer—a cultural tradition dating back to 1964. If you plan to visit during the summer months, check the programme for your travel dates.

Architecture and cultural use go hand in hand here: the priory offers a different perspective on local history from that of the fortifications. The frescoes and Romanesque style define its historical character, while its dedication to art and music describes its ongoing cultural focus. When planning your trip, consider these as reasons to visit in their own right, rather than basing your visit solely on a possible programme event.

Le Châtelard: fortification and visit

The fortification of Le Châtelard in Chirens was added to the inventory of historic monuments in 2004. Well-maintained paths are kept at the site, allowing visitors to explore the fortification freely. Here, a clearly defined heritage status goes hand in hand with specific visitor arrangements: you can freely explore the fortification along the well-maintained paths.

Le Châtelard is therefore a good choice as a destination in its own right for anyone interested in historic fortifications. It should not be confused with the Romanesque priory: the two sites represent different historic structures and stories. Together, they show that Chirens offers both sacred architecture and medieval military history.

The construction history of the Tour de Clermont

The Tour de Clermont began in the 11th century as a simple wooden tower on a medieval motte. From the 12th century onwards, the castle developed into a stone fortress, and the tower became its keep. This sequence makes the construction history particularly easy to understand: an early tower on an earthwork became part of a stone castle complex. Here, the term “keep” describes the tower’s later role within the fortress.

Near Lac de Paladru, the Tour de Clermont is one of the last remaining traces of a medieval castle in the Pays Voironnais. It also displays features of the earliest keeps of this period. The structure therefore connects local development with broader regional significance. From Charavines, you can reach the tower on foot via a route of just over four kilometres.

Two different types of visit are available, depending on what you are most interested in: at the Marais du Val d’Ainan, you can explore a themed wetland trail independently; to reach the Tour de Clermont, you can walk from Charavines to a historic structure. This information can help you plan nature exploration and castle history as distinct parts of your stay.
