At the Etang de Gôle, Montcarra reveals its natural side; churches, washhouses and the Four du Lyobard add tangible traces of the village’s history. When planning your visit, you can treat these as different points of focus: paths by the pond, architectural styles and local cultural events. This can help you decide whether to centre your stay on nature, architecture or both.

Nature at the Etang de Gôle

The Espace Naturel Sensible Etang de Gôle is a seven-hectare pond created in the 18th century. Protected species found there include the European pond turtle and the Helm-Azurjungfer damselfly. There are two walking paths around the Etang to explore, measuring 1.8 and 3.3 kilometres respectively. The routes differ by 1.5 kilometres, allowing you to compare the desired walking distance directly. This means you can start with the distance when choosing a route and decide how much of your stay to devote to nature.

Church and architectural history

The Church of Saint-François de Sales was built around 1857: it is a Neo-Romanesque building with a cruciform floor plan, made of local molasse stone. Its style, form, material and construction date provide four tangible points of reference if you would like to explore Montcarra’s architecture. The floor plan describes the layout, while molasse refers to the stone used. The church’s sacristy houses the Catafalque of Montcarra. It was restored in 2014 and has been listed as movable cultural heritage since 10 July 2019.

Washhouses and village history

The two washhouses by the Etang also differ in their materials and state of preservation. The Lavoir de l'étang is a small washhouse made of rammed earth on layers of pebbles above the pond. Below the Etang lies the Lavoir du Goulet, of which a washing slab measuring more than 17 metres in length has been preserved. This makes the difference tangible: at the Lavoir de l'étang, the focus is on a small building and its construction, while at the Lavoir du Goulet, it is on the surviving slab. The Four du Lyobard offers another glimpse into local architectural history: it was restored between 2015 and 2017 and is regularly used by village associations for events and traditional festivals. If you are interested in community-based culture, this use provides a tangible point of connection alongside the architectural details.

Getting oriented and cultural events

For orientation, Nature et Patrimoine de Montcarra provides audio guides to buildings, walking trails and narrated tours through the free Izi Travel app. The association Autour du Clocher de Montcarra organises concerts in the church. If you would like to include a concert in your trip, check the date in advance. The Church of Saint-François de Sales is open during Heritage Days and on the evening of 8 December. If you would like to visit the church, plan around these opportunities and check the specific dates.

The traditional Randonnée des Fleurs is an annual hiking event organised by Nature et Patrimoine de Montcarra. Dates, routes and arrangements may vary from one edition to another. Check the details of the relevant edition in advance if you would like to include the event in your trip.
