Three surviving towers, a granite block steeped in history and a historic walking tour give La Verpillière a tangible cultural identity. There are also opportunities for outdoor activities: a mountain bike trail through marshland and farmland, a tree-lined park and a kayaking route. To plan your visit, it’s worth deciding first whether you want to focus on local history or outdoor activities.
Historical traces and architecture
Three towers from the village’s former enclosure still remain. Another striking monument is the Monument aux Morts: it was erected in 1919 on an 84-tonne granite block known as the “Pierre de Milliet” and inaugurated in 1921. Shallow cup marks are visible on the stone and are interpreted as evidence of human presence dating back to prehistoric times. The statue “La Gloire” by sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet was added to the block. The monument brings together different layers of history.
The Maison forte is considered a symbol of the historic town centre. Other buildings also reflect different aspects of local history: the Église Saint-Denis was built from 1842 in the Neoclassical style. The Externat Sainte-Marie bears the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” label. Château Coron was built as a residence at the end of the 19th century. The surviving buildings include outbuildings, farm buildings, stables and the groom’s living quarters.
Walking tour and Maison Girier
The historic walking tour begins in the forecourt of the Maison Girier, on the Jardin de Ville side. Eighteen panels mark the route. The Maison Girier itself is a 19th-century residence associated with the Girier family. The municipality had it restored in 1998; today, it houses a municipal space with a wedding hall and exhibition area. If you plan to visit the exhibition area, check access in advance.
The Maison Girier is also the starting point of the “Tour de La Verpillière” mountain bike route. It passes through marshland and farmland towards the château and Étangs de Fallavier. This gives you a choice of two different experiences at a clearly identified landmark: a walking tour marked by information panels, and a mountain bike trail through varied landscapes. Check local trail conditions before setting off.
Park, marshland and water activities
The Jardin de ville is a large, tree-lined park near the town centre. It also has a children’s play area. A marshland area stretches along the Bourbre on the outskirts of La Verpillière, and contains a skatepark. The park, marshland and cycling route described above offer different options for planning a visit that balances culture and outdoor activities.
A kayaking route runs from the Pont du Canal de La Verpillière to the Pont de Jameyzieu and is about 10 kilometres long. You can paddle it independently using rented equipment. Check rental availability, water conditions and applicable safety requirements in advance. The route details include the start, destination and approximate length.
Getting there and finding accommodation
La Verpillière has an SNCF railway station with TER services. If you plan to travel by train, check the current TER timetable for your specific travel plans. When searching for a hotel, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: historic sites and architecture, or the trails, park and water activity described above.
