Get to know Saint-Andéol through its trails, cliffs and farm activities. The options differ considerably: some hikes start in the village, a stage of the GTV on foot offers views as far as the village, the Site d'escalade du Merlé has a choice of climbing routes, and farm visits are only possible by prior reservation. For planning, it is therefore worth considering the starting point, terrain and visitor requirements rather than treating these activities as interchangeable excursions.

Hiking and scenery in the Vercors

The marked Sous la Tune de l'Ours circular hike is 10.8 kilometres long and starts in Bourgmenu in Saint-Andéol. It climbs beneath the eastern Vercors barrier. The stated distance gives you a concrete reference for planning the hike; seasonal trail conditions may change and should be checked before setting out.

The Abri de la Peyrouse circular hike also starts in Saint-Andéol. On foot, it follows the foothills of the Vercors past imposing rock faces. Its scenery therefore differs from that of Sous la Tune de l'Ours, for which the specific distance and route beneath the barrier are the main points of reference.

Stage 3 of the GTV on foot offers a different perspective. This balcony trail runs at the foot of the eastern balcony range of the Vercors and overlooks Château-Bernard. The view extends along the northern Vercors range as far as the village of Saint-Andéol. If you would like to include a route with this view in your plans, it offers a different connection to the village from the two circular hikes that start in Saint-Andéol.

Mountain biking stage 2 of the GTV passes through an area of heightened environmental sensitivity in connection with the Réserve naturelle nationale des Hauts plateaux du Vercors. This is a distinct aspect of the stage that is relevant when navigating the mountain bike route.

The Abri de la Peyrouse shelter was renovated in 2022 through a joint initiative by the Parc du Vercors, the municipality and local residents. Check the shelter’s current condition in advance.

Climbing at the Site d'escalade du Merlé

At the Site d'escalade du Merlé, a 25-metre-high grey limestone wall offers technical climbing at grades 5c to 6c. There is also a beginner sector with four routes, each 10 to 15 metres long and graded 4a to 5a. The wall height, route length and grades give you concrete points of comparison when choosing between the two climbing areas.

Access to the climbing area is free every day throughout the year, weather permitting. As access depends on the weather and equipment condition can change, check the conditions and equipment before climbing.

Farm visits by reservation

GAEC des Gentianes offers visits throughout the year by prior reservation. Visitors can also take part in workshops on making faisselle or butter. The farm has 60 dairy cows and produces organic milk. The workshops give the visit a hands-on focus, while the farm details provide additional context.

Planning depends on what you have in mind: farm visits require a reservation, access to Merlé depends on favourable weather, and seasonal trail conditions may change. Tailor your preparations to the activity when choosing between hiking, climbing and the farm experience.
