A protected farmhouse, three chapels with distinct histories and Nordic winter sports offer different perspectives on Le Grand-Bornand. La Source adds to the picture with play areas, exhibitions and performances, along with the local tradition of farmhouse Reblochon. This raises a practical question when planning your trip: are you particularly interested in rural architecture, the history of the chapels, activities for children, cross-country skiing or regional food culture?
Maison du patrimoine: Architecture and Everyday Life
The Ferme dite « maison du patrimoine bornandin » has been protected as a historic monument since an order was issued on 19 September 2007. As the Maison du patrimoine, it is an authentic example of 19th-century rural architecture and an ecomuseum devoted to the traditions and craftsmanship of Le Grand-Bornand. The institution illustrates life in the late 19th century and the traditional division of houses into areas for families and animals. In this way, the history of the building can also be understood through the organisation of everyday domestic life.
Three Chapels, Different Stories
The Chapelle du Nant Robert overlooks the village and offers panoramic views of the Aravis mountain range. It was founded in 1762 at the initiative of the local community and is dedicated to Sainte-Anne and Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The Chapelle du Chinaillon was founded in 1677 and has retained its old-world character despite a major renovation in 1977. It houses objects ranging from the Baroque period to contemporary art. The Chapelle de la Duche is the oldest chapel in Le Grand-Bornand. It was founded at the end of the 17th century and rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. The saints to whom it is dedicated include Sainte Anne, Saint Grat and Saint Guérin. The chapels therefore offer different historical points of interest: their founding, the preservation of their old-world character and a traditional dedication.
La Source and Nordic Activities
La Source is a family attraction with 40 play areas, eco-friendly rides, mechanical and acoustic curiosities, a farm, an educational garden, exhibitions and performances. As an immersive experience for children, it also contributes to cultural outreach at the local, regional and cross-border levels. Individual workshops and programme items may change. If you are looking for activities for children or cultural outreach, La Source is a distinct attraction alongside the ecomuseum and chapels.
The Nordic ski area of Le Grand-Bornand has cross-country trails for all ability levels, as well as designated areas for cross-country skiing and Nordic leisure activities. La Dévallée is a cross-country trail that runs through the Bouchet Valley down to the village. Winter conditions and facilities can vary seasonally; trail availability depends on snow conditions. Check the latest conditions before your trip if cross-country skiing is one of your main reasons for travelling.
Farmhouse Reblochon as a Local Tradition
Le Grand-Bornand is considered the birthplace of farmhouse Reblochon. It is made twice a day at the milking site, using milk from a single herd. The production method makes the connection between the product and everyday farm life tangible. For travellers who include regional food in their choices, this tradition adds a culinary focus to the architectural and cultural themes.
