In spring, more than 30 waterfalls plunge down the cliffs of the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval. How dramatic the spectacle is depends on the snowmelt. There are also hiking trails, alpine landscapes and cultural sites, giving Sixt-Fer-À-Cheval a range of different attractions.

When planning your stay, it is worth considering the seasons and how much time the activities require. The waterfalls are a spring highlight, a themed exhibition at the abbey takes place in summer, and access to the Grand Massif ski area depends on winter operations. Hiking adds more seasonal experiences with specific time estimates.

Landscapes in the Nature Reserve

The Réserve naturelle de Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval/Passy covers 9,445 hectares and includes Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval and Passy. Its landscape and habitat types include cliffs, high-altitude lakes, beech forests, alpine grasslands, limestone pavements, mixed forests, ponds and peat bogs. This variety ranges from wooded areas to open alpine terrain and waterscapes.

The Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval makes seasonal changes especially striking: in spring, more than 30 waterfalls become a defining feature of the landscape. Their intensity varies with the snowmelt. If this natural spectacle is a priority, it is worth taking the time of year into account.

Hiking and Time Required

The hiking trail through the Gorges des Tines is 2 kilometres long, takes about 60 minutes and has 180 metres of ascent. These figures give an indication of the time required, but conditions on the trail can vary. A longer option is the Refuge et alpage des Fonts circular hike, which is listed as taking 3 hours and 15 minutes; trail conditions and seasonal access may vary. At 3 hours and 15 minutes, the Refuge et alpage des Fonts circular hike takes considerably longer than the trail through the Gorges des Tines, which takes about 60 minutes.

The hiking trail to the Cascade du Rouget starts at the Nant Sec car park at the edge of Salvagny and leads to the foot of the waterfall. For a different kind of activity, the Via Ferrata du Mont runs along the southern side, above the Gorges des Tines. Its features include an exposed suspension bridge and a ladder. Weather and current safety conditions are crucial on this route; check them before setting out.

A family-friendly forest walk leads to the hamlet of Le Mont, whose architecture is typical of Savoy.

Abbey, Chapels and Visitor Sites

The Abbaye de Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval dates from the 12th century. A themed exhibition is held there every summer; individual exhibition topics may change. Parts of the Ancienne abbaye de Sixt are protected under a historic monument designation issued on 17 February 1997.

The chapels also offer their own historical highlights. The Chapelle du Mont is in the hamlet of Le Mont and dates from the 17th century. It was founded on 9 January 1621 under the patronage of Saint Bernard of Menthon. The Chapelle des Fonts is an alpine chapel dating from the 17th century, built in 1681. From the end of the hamlet of Salvagny, it can be reached only on foot or by mountain bike.

The Maison de la Réserve Naturelle is a museum space dedicated to the Réserve naturelle de Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval/Passy. Groups are welcomed there by prior reservation. In the centre of the village, the Maison de la Montagne is the main visitor information point. As visitor services may change, check the latest information before your trip.

A Seasonal Option in Winter

The Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval ski area is connected to the Grand Massif by the 14-kilometre blue run, Piste des Cascades. Lift and piste operations, as well as access, vary by season. For a winter stay, this connection offers a different focus from the spring waterfalls or the summer exhibition; check the current piste status in advance.
