Les Carroz represents the connection to the Grand Massif ski area in Arâches-La-Frasse, as well as specific summer activities in the mountains. The area also offers themed trails, culture and Aquacime. For planning your trip, the season is a useful starting point: winter and summer activities differ considerably.
Skiing and summer activities
Les Carroz is part of the Grand Massif ski area. The ski area in Les Carroz has 265 kilometres of pistes; this figure may change depending on the ski area's configuration. Winter sports are therefore a clear focus when planning your trip. In summer, seven lifts that remain open throughout the season provide access from Les Carroz to the Grand Massif area for hiking and mountain biking. Lift operations vary by season.
Cycling activities can also be described using specific route details. Les Carroz Bike Park has seven downhill trails with a combined length of more than 14 kilometres. The number of trails and their total length may change due to maintenance or redesign.
The blue Woody Woodbiker trail is 5.5 kilometres long. The green trail of the same name is described by its route: it leads from the summit of the Télécabine at an altitude of 1,750 metres down to the village, offering views of Lac de Gron and the valley. For the blue trail, the specific reference point is its length; for the green trail, it is the starting point, destination and views.
Another downhill activity is mountain carting in Les Carroz. You ride a non-motorised, three-wheeled all-terrain kart down the mountain trails; gravity alone propels it.
Themed trails and scenery
The themed trail “Disparition à la Mine” is four kilometres long. It starts at Pas à l’Âne and leads to the hamlet of La Colonnaz and its small chapel. Frescoes and puzzles add interest along the way. Its story draws on the world of coal mining and characters from around the early 1940s. Access to the themed trail is seasonal.
Another idea for enjoying nature is the trail to Combe de l’Airon. It leads to a mountain hollow beside a lake and is suitable for a picnic in nature. The two trails therefore have different focuses: “Disparition à la Mine” centres on its narrated mining world and puzzles, while Combe de l’Airon is about spending time in the mountain hollow by the lake.
Culture and historical details
The Chapelle de Flaine in Arâches-la-Frasse was classified as a historic monument on 4 December 2014. Another specific cultural detail is the central image of the Saint-Michel altarpiece: it shows Saint Michael vanquishing the dragon, as well as Saint Anthony holding an open book and a staff topped with a bell.
The Centre Culturel des Carroz offers exhibitions, performances, workshops, talks and artistic events. This means there is a choice of different cultural activities alongside historical and visual arts themes.
Wellness and finding a hotel
Aquacime includes an indoor wellness and fitness area as well as an outdoor pool. In summer, the complex has two outdoor pools; seasonal opening arrangements may vary. This facility adds a wellness option to the range of outdoor activities.
