Flaine combines art and architectural history with a ski area and seasonal outdoor activities. When planning your stay, it helps to consider culture, ski slopes and outdoor activities as separate focuses. Visiting conditions vary: exhibitions change, and the availability of seasonal activities depends on operating conditions. Before travelling, check which activities are available during your visit.

Art and Architectural History

Since 1970, the Centre d’Art de Flaine has presented exhibitions and workshops on contemporary art. Exhibitions change, and admission is free. As the programme and admission policy may change, check both before your visit. The Centre offers a distinct focus alongside Flaine’s buildings: contemporary art and changing exhibitions.

The Chapelle Œcuménique was inaugurated in 1973 and built from wood and slate, without concrete. Since 2014, it has been protected as a historic monument, including its furnishings. The choice of materials and its protected status offer two different perspectives on the same building. The chapel is opposite the tourist office; from Flaine Forêt, you can reach it via the orange inclined lifts.

The historic Marcel Breuer complex is also part of Flaine’s architectural history: in 2008, it received the French Ministry of Culture’s “Patrimoine Architectural du XXème siècle” designation. Separately, the history of the “Le Flaine” hotel dates to its inclusion in the supplementary inventory in 1991. The two designations apply to different entries. Those interested in architectural heritage will find several distinct topics here, rather than just a single monument.

Landscape and Activities

The Désert de Platé is considered one of Europe’s largest lapiaz landscapes. The Flaine ski area has 64 slopes and 24 lifts. These figures may change as the ski area develops; if the exact selection matters for your stay, check the latest information before travelling.

The Parcours aventure – Expert features Tarzan jumps, suspension bridges and zip lines. Participants use climbing harnesses and safety lines, and qualified instructors supervise the activity. The course is in Flaine Forum, behind the Chapelle Œcuménique and near the Comptoir des Activités. It is seasonal, and its availability depends on operating conditions. So check in advance whether it will be open during your stay.

Accro-Roc offers a different kind of activity: this seasonal summer activity is a mini via ferrata route along a rock face. If you would like to include an outdoor activity in your travel plans, the Parcours aventure – Expert and Accro-Roc are two different options. Bear in mind the season and availability during your travel dates.

Le Carnet de Marcel is a day hike with the option of a picnic break. Its duration may vary depending on conditions and how much time you spend at the game stations. Allow some flexibility rather than assuming a fixed duration; the picnic break is an option, not a required part of the programme.

Planning Visits

Advance booking is required for the guided tour of Flaine’s heritage. As booking procedures may change from season to season, check the procedure for your travel dates. This allows you to plan a cultural visit and seasonal activities, each with different requirements, without combining them into a single programme.
