Veigy-Foncenex combines paths along the Hermance, cross-border hikes and historic buildings. When looking for a hotel in Veigy-Foncenex, you can plan your trip around these interests: should your stay focus mainly on hiking, culture or sports? The Hermance rises above the commune and flows into Lake Geneva 13 kilometres downstream. Veigy-Foncenex lies on both sides of the RD 1005, which connects Geneva with Thonon-les-Bains.

Hiking trails along the Hermance and across the border

The Boucle des Castors is a circular hiking trail along the lower reaches of the Hermance. Its French section runs as far as the Pont de France, while the Swiss section reaches the historic hamlet of Crevy; the return route passes through the town centre. The starting point is at the Champs-Faviol car park near the stadium. Along the way, the Boucle passes the entrance to the Château de Veigy-Foncenex. The château is privately owned.

Two named routes offer further guidance: the hiking trail is called “Sentier pédestre des Rives de l’Hermance”, while the cross-border route is called “Les Coteaux de l’Hermance”. Along with the Boucle des Castors, the routes differ in how they are classified: a named hiking trail, an explicitly cross-border route and a circular trail with a precisely described sequence of sections. If you would like to choose the type of route first when planning, this distinction offers a concrete point of reference.

Church, mill and architectural history

The Eglise Saint-Georges is a Baroque church. Its construction was completed in 1717, and its interior was finished in 1729. Twelve years separate the two completion dates. The Château de Veigy-Foncenex was built in the 14th century. The Moulin à Mouchet dates from the 17th century and has two wheels and two millstones. It is often mistakenly called Moulin à Canards.

The Pont de Crevy dates from the 18th century and marks the border with Switzerland. The Presbytère is also part of local history: it is the only surviving building from the former parish history of Foncenex and is privately owned. The church, mill, bridge, château and Presbytère thus represent different aspects of local and architectural history, from the Baroque church to the bridge’s role as a border marker.

Sports facilities and the focus of your stay

Two sports venues complement the hiking and cultural offerings: the Plateau multisports Alain Ferney multisports facility and the Skate Park are open to everyone. Alongside the circular hike described above, these named sports facilities offer other possible focuses for a stay in Veigy-Foncenex.

The historic buildings span the period from the 14th-century Château, through the 17th-century Moulin à Mouchet, to the 18th-century Eglise Saint-Georges and Pont de Crevy. This perspective on the village differs from exploring the paths along the Hermance or the cross-border routes. You can plan your trip around what you would like to focus on during your visit: hiking, architectural history or sports.
