Montmaur can be explored through two distinct interests: its historical heritage and tours through the surrounding landscape. The Château de Montmaur is a remarkable historic monument; at the same time, a very easy, three-kilometre discovery loop and a mountain biking route offer concrete ways to experience the area on foot or by bike. When planning, it is therefore worth first asking whether you want to focus on a summer cultural event, a short walk with opportunities to observe nature, or a ride with a varied route.

History and heritage

The historical sites offer distinctly different points of interest. The Romanesque Sainte-Philomène Chapel stands on a hill overlooking the Montmaur plain. In its forecourt is the grave of Antoine Mauduit (1902–1945), who is regarded as a figure of the local Resistance during the Second World War. Here, a clearly identifiable place in the landscape is linked to a specific remembrance of the war. The Eglise Saint Pierre aux Liens is a historic site and part of Montmaur’s religious heritage; the foundations of its present-day building date from the 14th century. The chapel and church thus offer different historical points of reference: the former is defined by its Romanesque style and position above the plain, while the latter is notable for the age of its foundations.

The château in summer

The Château de Montmaur opens its doors each summer for performances, concerts, festive events, and exhibitions. If you are planning your stay around a particular performance or exhibition, check the dates before you travel. Summer is therefore a specific time of year to consider if you want to combine a cultural programme with your stay.

On foot: Circuit du Pic et du Chamois

The very easy discovery loop N°17 (vert) – Circuit du Pic et du Chamois is 3 km long and starts at the “Parking des Sauvas” car park. It runs through the Les Sauvas state forest below the imposing south face of the Plateau de Bure and its extensive scree slopes. The route therefore takes you through both forest and scree landscape. Chamois can be spotted on the scree slopes, and crag martins nest at Roc des hirondelles. If you hope to see wildlife, treat both as possible nature sightings, not guaranteed experiences.

Mountain biking to La Montagne

Mountain biking route N°33 (Rouge) – Les Sauvas starts in Montmaur. It follows the road uphill to the picturesque hamlet of La Montagne, then descends on a trail via Les Sauvas. By comparison, the loop has a stated distance and difficulty level, while the mountain biking route is defined by its uphill road section and descent on a trail. Conditions on the loop may affect its use; seasonal changes in conditions should be taken into account for N°33. Check the current conditions for both routes before setting off.
