La Beaume lies at the foot of the Col de Cabre. Medieval architectural features, a 19th-century temple, a memorial site, hiking trails and a seasonal market each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, you can combine culture, outdoor activities and a culinary occasion; hike N°8 has a clearly specified starting point and route length, while a visit to the market depends on its dates.

Architecture and village history

The Portail Saint Michel is the only one of the village’s three medieval gates to have survived. Its design brings together two elements from different periods: the portal dates from the 14th century and has a pointed arch; the round arch above it was added in the 15th century. The sequence of pointed and round arches makes the later extension of the structure clear. The gate provided access to the Priory of Saint-Michel, which stood on the opposite bank of the Chauranne stream. Its history therefore encompasses both its architectural form and its former connection to the priory.

The Temple du Villard represents a different period. It was built in 1851 and is the largest temple in the Hautes-Alpes department. Together with the medieval portal, it creates a clear contrast in period: the two buildings represent different historical points of reference in La Beaume. At the Château d'Agoult, attention turns to the tower. Its ground floor is made of large, carefully laid stone blocks; rusticated blocks mark the corners, and simple loopholes pierce the walls. These architectural features are clearly distinct from the portal’s arches: here, the focus is on the masonry, the treatment of the corners and the openings.

Hiking and a place of remembrance

The red-marked hike N°8, «Cascade de la Beaume», starts at the car park in the village of La Beaume, next to the motorhome parking area, and is 8 km long. The route length helps you assess the hike in relation to your other interests during your stay. Allow time according to your own pace and check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change. Another hiking route leads from the Col du Monument to the commune of Montbrand along a GR trail. The route names have different points of reference: N°8 is called «Cascade de la Beaume», while Montbrand is named as the destination of the GR trail.

At the Col du Monument, a memorial commemorates young members of the Resistance who were killed by German troops in 1944. The pass thus connects a hiking reference with a specific act of historical remembrance. If you are considering both nature and history when planning your trip, you can make this site a separate focus alongside the village’s buildings.

Seasonal market

The Marché gourmand de La Beaume is a market featuring local producers, with food and drink available on site. As a seasonal event, it adds a culinary focus to the architecture and hiking themes. Check the event dates before your trip if you would like to plan a market visit.

The different highlights are easy to distinguish: the Portail Saint Michel, the Temple du Villard and the tower of the Château d'Agoult offer different insights into architecture and history. Hike N°8 can be clearly assessed by its starting point and length; the GR trail leads to Montbrand. The seasonal market adds another option, depending on the dates. Which of these facets matters most to you depends on whether you want to associate La Beaume primarily with culture, hiking or a culinary occasion.
