For travellers interested in history and themed trails, Rosans offers several specific points of interest: medieval defensive architecture, sundials and traditional crafts. The surrounding area also features scenic landscapes and unusual sandstone formations.

Defensive history in the village centre

The Tour Carrée stands at the centre of the medieval village of Rosans. Dating from the 12th century, it is built from diamond-shaped sandstone blocks and has walls four metres thick. In summer, it hosts arts and crafts exhibitions; the seasonal programme may change.

The fortified village still has a town wall with gates leading into the historic centre. Another trace of the fortifications can be found on Rue du Tunnel: the old calade corresponds to a former rampart walkway, later covered by neighbouring houses. Together, the town wall, gates and calade reveal different aspects of the village’s history.

The Château de Lesdiguières also brings together different phases of construction. It was built around 1390, starting with a medieval tower, and extensively remodelled in the early 17th century. Its medieval origins and later alterations mark two clearly distinct periods in its building history.

Themed trails with different focuses

The Chemin du Facteur follows the former postal route between Rosans and Sainte-Marie-de-Rosans, which was used until 1925. In Rosans, the trail starts at the church square. Check the current trail conditions and signage before setting out.

The Sentier Toponymie du Rosanais is a 6.9-kilometre themed trail in Rosans. Check its current condition and access before using it. The Chemin des Roses, meanwhile, is marked in the village streets by roses painted on the ground. Its blue route starts at the Château de Rosans and is specifically suitable for wheelchair users, people with walking difficulties and pushchairs. Check the local accessibility information again before your visit.

When choosing a trail, different features may take priority: the historic route of the Chemin du Facteur, the length of the Sentier Toponymie du Rosanais, or the stated suitability of the blue rose route for specific user groups.

Sundials and crafts

The “Giono” sundial in Rosans dates from 1981 and bears a line by Jean Giono. The De Turckheim sundial is on the façade of the former temple, now home to the town hall; its motto is “Plus est en toi”. Both sundials are distinctive cultural features of the village.

The Route des cadrans solaires in the Sisteron Buëch area is a self-guided, map-based route that also includes the Giono sundial in Rosans. Route details may change, so check them in advance.

At the Forge de Rosans, a knife-maker crafts handmade, unique, made-to-measure knives. Visits to the workshop are possible by appointment; check availability in advance. Marion Richaume is a ceramic artist who makes faience pieces inspired by nature. Her works are available in Rosans at the Atelier de la Lune. If you would like to visit the studio, confirm access in advance.

La Rivière des Arômes offers a seasonal experience centred on lavender distillation. This includes harvesting and distillation, as well as the production of essential oil and floral water. The offer is seasonal; enquire in advance about current visiting options.

Landscape around Rosans

Around Rosans, visitors can enjoy views over the Oule Valley and its dark marl slopes. Just outside the village, the Plan d’eau de Pigerolles is a place to relax in green surroundings. Conditions at the water may change seasonally; check what currently applies before visiting.

Nearby, above Saint-André-de-Rosans at Le Serres d’Autruy, rounded sandstone blocks known as “dinosaur eggs” can be seen. This is another natural feature in the area around Rosans, although the blocks described are specifically located at Saint-André-de-Rosans.
