The medieval village of Lucéram is perched on a rocky spur. Its church art, seasonal nativity scene tradition and numerous hiking trails offer different highlights for a trip. You can explore its architectural and artistic history outside the Christmas season; for the Circuit des Crèches, however, the dates in December and January are key. The trails also vary in length, difficulty and elevation gain, making it easier to plan an outing based on your interests and the level of challenge you want.

Village History and Church Art

The Église Sainte-Marguerite has been protected as a historic monument since September 21, 1983. It was built in the late 15th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, its façade was remodeled and a bulbous bell tower was added. The church also houses a panel painting of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, attributed to Louis Bréa. It also contains a collection of religious goldwork.

The Chapelle Saint-Grat is located at the entrance to the village. Some of its frescoes date from the late 15th century and are attributed to Jean Baleison. Together, Sainte-Marguerite and the chapel offer different perspectives on local art history: the focus here is on frescoes, while there it is on a panel painting, goldwork and a façade altered over several centuries.

Nativity Scene Season in Lucéram and Peïra-Cava

Since 1998, the Circuit des Crèches has been held in the village of Lucéram and in Peïra-Cava. This seasonal tradition is open in December and January; the dates vary each year. Numerous local families make original nativity scenes for the event. If you want to experience this tradition, plan your visit around the dates for that year.

The Musée de la crèche displays more than 150 nativity scene and santon works, including an outstanding collectible Neapolitan nativity scene. The museum is open daily during the Circuit des Crèches. Outside this period, contact the Maison de Pays. This makes it possible to consider a museum visit and the seasonal event together, without confusing their different opening arrangements.

Hiking Trails and Scenery around Peïra-Cava

Lucéram is the starting point for numerous hiking trails. Routes vary in length, difficulty and elevation gain. These features provide concrete points of comparison when weighing the distance and challenge before choosing a hike.

From Peïra-Cava, trails lead to an icefall behind the Granges du Lac, formed by a stream in the Vallon de St Colomban. Other trails lead to naturally shaped sandstone rock formations on the ridge near the orientation table. From there, there is a striking view of the Mercantour range. The two scenic destinations are quite distinct: one centers on the icefall and its stream, while the other focuses on the rocks, ridge and view.

Peira Cava Aventures is also located in Lucéram. The site covers more than two hectares and includes several courses; the “Bambin” course is accessible from the age of two. Operations may vary by season. Another historical landmark is the Casernement de Peïra-Cava: built between 1883 and 1887, it was designed to accommodate 600 soldiers year-round. Its construction period and original function set it apart from the older village and church heritage.

Planning Your Visit

The Maison de Pays de Lucéram provides visitor information and offers audio-guided and accompanied tours. For the Circuit des Crèches and a museum visit, check the dates for your planned year of travel; operations at Peira Cava Aventures may vary by season. This allows you to choose between focusing on nativity scenes, church art or hiking trails and take the relevant conditions into account when planning.
